HBO docuseries: The Defiant Ones

Finally was able to watch it. I liked it. It was a bit self-congratulatory at times but interesting nonetheless.

I liked it. Knew a bit about Dre from Straight Outta Compton, etc.; less so about Iovine. Some powerful soliloquies from Dre, especially admitting and apologising for the attack of Dee Barnes. Crazy how much good music both of those guys contributed to.

It was really good. It provide my lame whiteness because I kept wanting more Tom Petty footage.

I’d heard the story about the Iovine/Stevie Nicks/Tom Petty “triangle” before, but never from all three of them, in their own words
.

this is now up on netflix (in UK at least) – am loving it.

some takeaways are the insane work ethic that got Springsteen, Bono, Dre, etc to the top, and how the sheer artistic push of people like Reznor and the NWA crew can (arguably) trump the violent call of their lyrics.

also, that photo behind Dre in his home interviews. Pure serenity and equilibrium – wonder what M. Manson’s living room looks like.
