Excellent documentary airing on HBO this week featuring the Stanley Cup Champion 73-74 and 74-75 Philadelphia Flyers (aka the Broad Street Bullies). A must-see for hockey fans, sport fans in general, and for fans of a bygone era where men were men, and American hockey players were toothless animals.
I moved here in the Fall of '73 and became a fan right away.
Excellent documentary, even more so if you’re a local and are familiar with the “mythology”
“Let’s go Flyers and let’s go Gene Hart”
I still have my signed Andre Dupont jersey. Although I loved Gene Hart, Don Earle wasn’t too bad either. “He hit the f*&king post!!!” I met Ed Van Impe a couple of times when I skated at Skateland in Brookhaven, and Jimmy Watson a few times - his girlfriend/wife and I had mutual friends. Even Rick MacLeish who had a reputation for being aloof helped me with my wrist shot.
They were good guys and always had a kind word for a 13 year old kid.
I’m looking forward to seeing this as I vividly remember the battles they had with the Bruins and Rangers back then. Tough group led by Schultz, Moose Dupont, Hound Dog Kelly, Saleski and Ed Van Impe mixed in with some tremendous skill players in Rick Macleish, Bill Barber and Reggie Leach, backed Parent in goal with Clarke at the center of it all. As much as I hated them back then, I could always appreciate how good they were. Fun team to watch.
Habs have everything clicking right now, Halak playing unbelievable in goal and everyone stepping up and playing well together. P.K. Subban has stepped right in and been a solid contributor. They were able to expose the Caps by shutting down Ovechkin (who was also trying to do everything himself in that series) and kept Crosby and Malkin quiet in the second round.
As for the Bruins, they have reverted back to late season form the past two games by standing around and being late in reacting to what the Flyers are doing instead of taking the game to them as they did early in the series as well as against Buffalo in the first round. They’ve generated no real scoring pressure around the net and most of their shots have been from outside of the slot. No one has stepped up to fill the void from David Krejci’s injury and their overall defense and power play have been sloppy.
Should the Bruins snap out of it and win tomorrow night, we would have three Original Six teams in the conference finals, been a long time since that has happened. Would love to see an all-Original Six Finals.
Everyone keeps talking about how Halak was the difference in the game last night…not sure what game they were watching. The habs scored 5 goals and all the players did a great job in their defensive zone. Everyone was blocking shots and grinding together. It was quite something to see. They REALLY look like a great team. They are all coming together nicely at the perfect time.
PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Flyers are about to find out what it’s like to play from in front. It’s been a while since the NHL’s comeback kids have been the ones being chased.
Fresh off a stirring Game 7 win over the Boston Bruins that capped a rally from three games down, the Flyers scored early against Jaroslav Halak and the Montreal Canadiens and rolled to a 6-0 win in the opener of the Eastern Conference finals on Sunday night.
