The race is called the Lavaman Keauhou and there doesn’t appear to be a race website yet… it’s in late September. http://www.multisporthq.com/2009/02/28/hawaii-gets-a-new-big-island-triathlon/
Soooo tempting… sadly there is no way to sign up yet.

My wife is assistant RD for Lavaman and Lavaman II. I was just in Hawaii doing a lot of running on the course making sure it is accurate and safe. I tell you, it is going to be an awesome race with a few surprises. It is a tough course. Not sure when registration comes up though. Will let you know as it will be a great race.

Cant wait till more info comes out on this race, hopefully it will be on the last weekend of sept
.
Any hints on what the course will be like?
Race distances? I can see lots of Kona camps materializing around this race.
Maybe the old Keauhou course? Remember the pit?
Memories of the Keauhou bay swim, fricken deep. Getting a push up the hill at T1. That was a great course.
The run course does take a trip down into the pit and you will be swimming in Keauhou bay

cool maybe I can catch a ride on a manta ray. That will improve my swim time
I was on the Big Island for the last couple of weeks - swam the bay to Capt Cooks monument about 1.1 miles then returned - swam with about 40 spinner dolphins on the way back. Wonderful swim.
Did team Mango race the week before - 600 M swim - 14 mile back from the pier to the bottom of the Pit and back and then a 2 mile run -
Great to over take two guys on the bike ride - one riding a P3C and the other a Transition - they were 2 up time trialing it. Over took the two studs and said - hey guys I am 56 years old this is my first race in 3 years on a 26Lb road rental bike - what is wrong with this picture…
The look on their faces was wonderful.
I no doubt just spreading rumors around but the course i’ve heard goes as fallow.
Swim: in keauhou bay w/ the fairwind 2 being the turn around boat.
T1: a 1+ mile run across the golf course to the outrigger hotel where the actual transition area will be.
Bike: you start the 2 loop course hanging a right out of the hotel, heading up Kam 3 then north up the highway to town and back south down alii dr. to the outrigger. 2 times.
T2: outrigger hotel.
Run: i’ve heard that it goes to the pit, then run through the Sheraton, to a gravel road behind keauhou canoe club, through the golf course and to the finish line at the outrigger.
Great that there is going to be another race in Hawaii, because the reality is that even though the grand-daddy of IM’s is here, there are actually limited opportunities for people who live here - particularly now with the cost of travel and the economy.
For those of us regular (albeit serious) triathletes living in Hawaii, is it incredibly difficult and expensive to not only do, but just to register for an IM. Yes, we get to live and train in Hawaii, but our racing opportunities are limited and expensive.
My hope would be that there would be a full distance IM that residents could actually enter - reality being that most (of us) can’t get into Kona.
I wonder what it would take for Honu to offer a full distance option. There are other races, typically independents, that run dual full and half distances simultaneously. Do the same course, just do double loops of all three segments…

That is what Ive been hoping for myself, maybe on another island, Maui or Kauai, Oahu also has the original course. I doubt this will happen though.
#1 go win new zealand
#2 tell your wife we want the old keauhou “hill’s from hell, farewell to keauhou” run course back=)!!! just the portion from the pit on, remember those hills!
#3 tell her to get me more info so we can do a write up in our magazine or something, better yet she should place and ad and send me a comp’d entry;)
Seriously from what I’ve heard it should be a great race. Lavaman is the best olympic distance in Hawaii and if they run it anything like that race it’ll be awesome! And for anyone looking a killer tri in Kona, www.lavamantriathlon.com although it sells out every year so no real need to advertise for them…
I wonder what the logistics (and economics) are of doubling up and offering a full IM at what has been just a 1/2 vs. staging a full - which is obviously expensive and complicated.
Can someone tell me what the pit is? I am staying in Kona for the next three weeks for training and I would like to find some new running routes. I am 2 miles south of downtown Kona, with just my bike and shoes, so my travel options, other than my own calorie expenditure is limited to just that.
Also, any references for some “less traveled” riding routes? I have been south, and north and having some new biking options would be great. Anyone else battle that wind on the Queen K the last 4/5 days? WOW! Going out was brutal but coming back at 38 MPH was fun!
Thanks
