I’m interested in advice for pacing and course tactics for Hawaii 70.3. Does anyone have experience on this course that they can share? Any good tips?
Thanks!

you can do a search and find a lot of good advice. that being said ive done the race the past 3 years and all i can say is to leave something for the run. the terrain(golf course) is brutal, the steep little ups and downs are pretty tough and the heat radiates off the grass. ive run a 83 minute open half and have yet to crack a 1:43 for the run even with going a little more conservative on the bike. its all good tho, youre still on the big island, the swim is all time and the post race beers never fail to hit the spot
Out of the water up to the QK sucks.Take it easy or you will blow early.
Run hard. It’s not as hot as most racing think.
-don’t go anearobic on the run up to T1, it’s a long and steep run
-the climb to Hawi is only half the battle, don’t kill yourself going up as coming down is not just a nice coast downhill. It’s only 800ft total elevation gain over 18 miles so like I said, leave some gas in the tank for the way back
-the run can be brutal if you let it. don’t expect to get into a zone and just see the miles fly by, they won’t. I’d say don’t go out way to fast but at the same time you really just need to try and keep it consistant and push through. Like others said the run has lots of little ups and downs, short but steep hills, grass then pavement then grass sections and is a, err, well exciting run;P
