Have the polls closed in Scotland Yet?

What is the word?

They close at 10:00pm UK time.

10PM? Wow.

Results will start coming in overnight. There will probably be an exit poll that will give some indication of the result. Although it’s accuracy will have a high degree of error due to the large turn out and lack of polling experiance on independence votes!

The FX markets moved hard in anticipation of a “No” vote today (last I checked).

2 minutes until they close - the news reporters haven’t been allowed to report anything until they close - so no one knows anything yet

How do “they” (whoever they is) control what reporters are allowed to report?

.

It’s so that they cannot influence the vote - if they report that Yes is in the lead then Yes voters who have not yet voted may think it’s not worthwhile. All the reporters have complied with the rule as far as I’m aware.

It really isn’t that hard you make a law that says you can’t report anything under some type of threat and the news media listens because the threat is sufficient to keep them away. The US is a little unusual in they way they report exit polls all through a voting day. You don’t see that in Canada either, I’m not sure exactly what the laws are but it just doesn’t happen. For a federal election you might see the east cost reporting the results before polls close in the west but you wouldn’t see results in Alberta before the Alberta polls close.

Actually the major news outlets here do not report results or exit poll information until the polls are closed in each respective state.

I wonder if voters had to show id to be able to vote.

In Canada there are actual laws that keep media from reporting anything on the day of the election until the polls close.

For Federal elections they couldn’t report until the last polls closed - can’t remember if they changed that or not.

AP reported on a post-closing poll that showed it 53/47 in favor of “no,” but the poll has a 3% margin of error…

97% of eligible voters registered.

Amazing turn out for what is obviously a massively important referendum.

Whichever way it goes though, it’s safe to say about half the population won’t be happy.

I wonder if voters had to show id to be able to vote.

No, you just need a Scottish accent to vote.

Don’t even need that!
You just had to be 16 or over and living in Scotland. If you were a Londoner working in Glasgow, you can vote.
But, AFAIK, no absentee voting. So Sean Connery had to be in Soctland to vote today. Or, if you were a life long Inverness resident who spent the fall in London to work, your SOL.

Not following it closely but definitely have mixed feelings on this. My surname is Scottish but is 150 yrs removed from the old country and I’m also a typical North American mutt with other ethnicities thrown in - English, Welsh, Irish and French in my case. Surprisingly my wife is much more interested and with her French, Dutch and Swedish old country heritage has no connection to Scotland.

Live updated map. . . No’s winning so far.

No. That individual could apply by post.

55% No - result confirmed - no to independence - thank goodness
