The highway out of town is pretty decent for riding, though I can’t say I’ve ridden it myself. It’s been a few years since I’ve been there, but that’s what I remember.
Whatever you do, don’t miss Leatha’s barbeque joint. Best freakin’ BBQ ever.
what highway?
thanks for the info…
You’re putting your life in danger on any highways out of town, or on any roads around there. Lots of rednecks in trucks that throw things
Safe riding would be the Longleaf Trace, old traintracks turned into a trail but it’s flat as a pancake and boring as hell riding through the same scenery. pine trees just about the whole way.
Hey, John,
X2 on the Longleaf Trace. http://www.mylongleaftrace.com/. And one person’s boring is another person’s beautiful, especially since the dogwoods may be blooming now–although I can’t actually remember whether there are any dogwoods on the LLT.
I live in Georgia now, but some of my happiest casual cycling memories are of the annual Longleaf Trace Birthday Challenge that started at the other end of the Trace, in Prentiss, Mississippi. The Birthday Challenge was a noncompetitive event in which you cycled or skated or whatevered your age in miles and then stayed for the live band and food after.

P.S. I have not seen the LLT since before Katrina–I remember hearing there were lots of trees down, so there may be barren stretches now.
any idea where to swim in hattiesburg…the longleaf trace is where im gonna ride…thanks.
The longleaf trace definately be where you want to ride. For the swim you might want to just try to look up their local Y, or call the University and see if they have a pool.

Long Leaf Trace at USM Gateway on 4th Street. It goes all the way to Prentiss, MS. ( 41 miles one way). You can get off the Trace and ride county roads for hills, if you like. The Payne Center at USM has a pool. It is right across the street from the Trace. Also, the Family YMCA on Veterans Memorial Blvd. has a pool. I would join you, but I have a previous engagement with a matching case of sinusitis & bronchitis. Lucky ME! Safe travels.
