Has there ever been a doping scandal in swimming?

The results were shocking. The sample contained a level of alcohol that would be fatal if consumed by a human.

Yeah, but if you read the article carefully, they note right up front that she is indeed *not* human, she's Irish.

By the accounts I’ve heard, Ous rather stupidly took far too many No Doze trying to stay awake to get a school paper done, and then had the in-competition positive test for stimulants a few days later.

And I’m actually inclined to think he was an utter idiot rather than he was a systematic doper because it’s made very clear that the US Open is a meet where they will test the podium finishers as well as random other competitors, and Ous was definitley racing for a podium spot at that meet.

American swimmer Angel Martino was caught at the 1988 Olympice trials. As I remember in talking with a doctor friend he told me that she was caught because they could see from the test she was using a masking agent. And the masking agent was the give away clue.

Here’s something I read:
At the 1988 Olympic trials, Martino set American records in the 50- and 100-meter freestyles. But she lost both records and her spot on the Olympic team when she tested positive for anabolic steroids. All along Martino has claimed the substance was from a birth-control pill, and she has understandably grown weary of the subject.

good news I come from o’gallagher stock

Yeah he could have made it by mistake. But that´s hard to tell…
Even the ones who obviously are doped use the “mistake” as an excuse
Its a sad story anyhow…He has been doing lots of great competitions the last year

swimmers of all athletes have my great respect.

Swimmers using EPO. The Chinese pulled 27 of their swimmers days prior to the 2000 Sydney Olympics after it was announced that testing in Sydney would be strict…from memory I think most of their swimmers were sprinters and looked like GIANTS

http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/stories/s172822.htm

The rumor mill has also long tied Massi Rossilino to EPO. There was a time when he shared a doc with a lot of pro cyclists, and he also hasn’t swam as well in general since EPO was a testable substance.

For a long time, it was such a frustrating sport to follow since the people who were known dopers (and who would later be proven to be doing so) were not caught, and then you turn around and have cases like the whole Claudia Poll affair, where WADA refused to look at evidence that there were serious irregularities with the test, including missing anti-tampering security devices and tests performed on a sample tube labeled FIFA instead of FINA.

I do wonder whether testing for all drugs would tend to make swimming times faster since it might make swimmers a lot less likely to use drugs that are illegal and that reduce performance.

One time, at swim camp there was this real dope… sorry wrong dope, my bad.

I think you might want to take another look at swimmers in general as clean.

#1-Of the two major doping scandals both were government run affairs the East Germans and the Chinese. While it certainly does not look good it is hard to tie the whole of swimming to governmental fraud. Especially considering the fact that many of the athletes who were doped were most likely were pressured by big brother to do so.

#2- Of the few other cases of doping there are only a very small handful of positives. And considering the fact that world wide swimming is a far more popular sport with many more competitions and tests this speaks very highly of the sport. I don’t think doping will ever go away, there will always be bad apples, and the few that been caught are prime examples.

#3- Look at the money involved in swimming- it just is not there- pull out the one outlier in Mike Phelps and the average swimmer makes next to nothing- especially compared to many other sports cycling included. The bottom line here is that there is no “Pro” swimming. Take the money out of the sport and you take the motivation to dope out with it.

On the whole the prost is for the most part clean, it has its losers and more than likely as I am typing there is probably an elite lever swimmer on some form of dope right now. But when compared to professional cycling swimming is about as clean a sport as you will find. I think it would be a far stretch to say that doping in swimming is a cultural thing like it is in cycling.

Don’t throw us under the bus just yet!
