I’m racing HM for a tuneup for Miamiman. Any tips?
I did Boulder Sunset (essentially the same course) last weekend and was very unhappy with my bike power. I was expecting to hold 90% FTP, but could only muster 80% and it felt like death. It was my first race in Colorado since moving here 1.5 years ago, and the short, punchy climbs with my 1x setup really took their toll mentally.
Hoping not to have the same experience in a few weeks at HM.
I’ll be out there racing the Du, in preps for the MiamiMan Du.
My plans for the bike is to push Jay and 36, recover down St Vrain, keep speed on 75th, then push Monarch/Diagonal. Then repeat on lap 2.
The run is never easy around the res, so be sure to save something especially if it’s hot with the lack of shade.
I’m personally going to hold a bit back on the bike to be fresher for the run. Lots of time to make up on that half mary as other blow up.

“Holding back a bit” means Alex will only average 27 mph instead of 28. Not pink.
Also, even when there is no sun, there never seems to be any shade out there. It’s still bright…

Almost the same, but not exactly. Also – two laps of that. That longish climb that starts on Diagonal and goes through Jay st until turn to Broadway is a bitch on lap two.
coast on descents? or keep steady target power? (like on 36) An elementary question, but back in FL we locked into our target power and were off… none of this undulating nonsense.
Identify what your steady target power is for the bike leg. Then, on the uphills, push a bit harder than that target. On the downhills, back it off a bit.
The only coasting I plan to do is the first half mile or so on St Vrain where I’ll likely hit 45mph. But the rest of that road (likely with tailwind), I’ll back off from my target power by like 10% because I’ll be riding 30-35mph. And the extra effort for a bit more speed is better spent on the uphills later in the course where my speed will drop around 20mph.
Sure, has to be sub 2 hrs. That’s the bike though, not the run. I know you can already do a 1:15-1:20 run. I don’t think anyone in your “class” is going to be racing–unless Tom Zirbel hops in–and I don’t really count him anyhow when he shows up.
