Harris's Black Housing Assistance Plan

I wonder if a white candidate said he/she was wanted to invest $$$ for white families if that would be seen as racist? We all know white families don’t need money because they have all the advantages, so this would never happen but if there was a poor white family, or Asian, or Hispanic somewhere… Go team donkey.

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., announced Saturday that she would invest $100 billion of federal money into housing assistance for black families as part of an effort to close the racial wealth gap in the United States if elected president.

“After generations of discrimination, it’s time to give Black families a real shot at homeownership,” Harris tweeted on Saturday.

While appearing at Essence’s Global Black Economic Forum, she emphasized the role of homeownership in driving the growth of wealth in the U.S. According to Harris’ campaign, she would help 4 million homebuyers through down payment and closing-cost assistance – granting up to $25,000 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Her plan would also seek to increase credit access by alter crediting reporting standards to include payments on credit cards, student loans, auto loans, and mortgage payments."

Of course there are no details on how any of this would work but rest assured somebody with a job is going to pay the tab.

Uh aren’t those already included?

Also this is by definition racial discrimination.

My problem with this…this will in all likelihood only help already middle class African Americans, when the real assistance is needed by those mired in inner city ghettos and public housing with horrifically bad schools that ensures generational poverty. That’s where $100B needs to be spent, IMHO.

Yeah, I agree with you. Prior housing subsidy efforts have ranged from mixed to awful in their results. So I’m skeptical on any new efforts. Also agree that there’s good evidence that breaking the cycle of poverty requires intervention at a young age. It’s really hard to get people to change once they’re older than about 13. Sadly.

So … she’s hell-bent on recreating the 2008 housing crisis. Sounds legit.

I think it is part of the Kamila Harris plan to sabatague her run for president. What a stupid idea.

It may help her win the Dem nomination, but it will probably cause moderates and independents to vote against her.

Give the down payment to people who can’t or haven’t saved for it. Then expect good results.

Dumb idea.

That was my exact thought.

I’m sure they’re out there but I can’t imagine something like this would truly throw very many moderates or independents into the Trump camp. Sure if there was a sensible Republican as the alternative, but Trump?

I don’t think it would thrown them into the Trump camp. It might keep them from voting though. Low turnout works in Trump’s favor.

The better question how many black voters would this get her?

Definitely not enough to offset the loss in non-Black voters, even in the Democratic base. I can see this being a real turn off to the Hispanic and Asian communities. I could even see it being a negative with some Black voters. This is a losing issue period.

Yup, I get where she’s coming from in theory. FHA has redlined minority mortgages just within the last generation or two, the poverty cycle is huge when you factor in things like the incarceration discrepancy between blacks & whites with blacks being prosecuted at substantially higher rates than whites, black folks having a substantially smaller amount of wealth than white folks, issues exacerbated through the head start white folks have had in our country’s history. Something should be done.

But like you said, I just don’t know that this is the right solution, at least not unless it’s implemented in a manner that truly goes beyond just housing and addresses other discriminatory practices. It’s hard to lift up a community by putting someone into a house, but then continuing the same practices that led to gaps in the first place. Addressing those other discriminatory systems just hasn’t happened in a truly effective manner beyond the civil rights legislation of ~60 years ago. New issues have cropped up in their place and until we’re ready to actually face those as a nation – which starts with acknowledgment not just of past wrongs but their current impacts and current practices – we won’t solve the problem through quick band aids, which might actually just make things worse anyway.

The schools are not the problem.

If she had further defined the program to be for ancestors of slaves, you could make the case that this was a finely tailored reparation plan by another name. Is reparation also racial discrimination?

Yes, but that’s not her plan. She’d push FICO scores to include rent and utility payments - which would help people who don’t take loans.

I’ve never lived in a red state, but her down payment grant idea exists - Mass Housing gives 3%/$15,000 loans to qualified buyers (15 years @ 1%, not grants)

At least this girl can recognize and stand up to racism when she sees it.

I saw that story this weekend and applaud her efforts. As to your link - and I understand the source - but "“Half-Black Rapper?” Really? Did they refer to President Obama is the “half-black President?”

It depended what he was up to.
