Harold pinter on america in the world

harold pinter just delivered his nobel acceptance lecture, the full text of which is at the link below. it began with a discussion of his art, but quickly turns to a discussion of america’s role in the world since world war II and particularly in the present day.

Just because we propped up a few tin horn dictators (ok, maybe 10 or 12) and invaded Iraq without cause doesn’t mean we’ve lost our moral compass. I mean, we haven’t nuked anyone since 1945. Give us a break! Sheezh…why does everyone hate America?

Harold Pinter is a bloviating gasbag with diarrhea of the mouth. Probably also a self-hating doom-n-gloom Brit with typcially bad dentistry. Doesn’t he usually take high tea with George Galloway?

Why do people expect to be taken seriously just because they become Nobel laureates? Can’t their ideas be just as roundly ridiculed as anybody else’s? Like mine, for instance (smile)?

Hey…Tookie Williams (soon-to-be-executed murderer and Crips gang founder) was nominated for a Nobel Prize. Why don’t we prop him up there, too? I’m sure he’s got loads of opinions about the evil, nefarious United States and its mongrel civilization people.

Funny, sounds like he supported WWII now, but the fact is that he refused to do his required national service in the late 1940s. “Perhaps I will be called up again for the next war, but I won’t go.”

Very strange attitude for the son of a Jewish tailor who had to flee the bombings of London in WWII. “The condition of being bombed has never left me,” Pinter later said. Yet he seems to hate the American and British governments that brought it to an end.

His is a typical condescending attitude promulgated while secure in the knowledge that the RAF and the 82nd Airborne will protect his right to express it.
