Hard core or idiotic

I’m supposed to do a half Ironman this weekend, but all of a sudden I had to pull two all nighters in a row for work. I’m leaving right after work tomorrow (after the second all nighter), driving 5 hours for the race Saturday morning. It’s my 6th or seventh half - 2nd of three this year. I’m in pretty good shape (although I haven’t worked out the last three days) and I’m going alone. Is this hard core cool or idiotic stupid what the hell are you thinking stay home?

Are you driving right back after the race, or will there be a little time for a nap?

I’d say it’s nicely hard core to do the race, but driving while very, very sleep deprived and exhausted from a race is idiotic.

If you are under 30 y.o., I say go for it. Over 40, take a friend to help out. In between, flip a coin.

No hurry after the race…

Are you there to “race” it, or just to “do” it? I’d reckon that if you had planned on racing hard, your race is already done - you’ll very likely be too fatigued to really dig deep and go to the wall.

If you’re just interested in “doing” the event however, and have sufficient base fitness, then go ahead. Take it down a notch on the bike, and don’t kill yourself on the run. Use the day to practice nutrition strategies, and as a rehearsal for your next 1/2.

that is one of the best smartass responses I’ve seen on this forum.

Do it and post your finishing pic. I’ll set that picture as my computer wallpaper because you will be my official hero. Seriously, go for and live to tell the story to your grandchildren.

that’s freakin funny

Neither… do the race.

I did the race in the end – really was no question about it.

After getting 6 hours of sleep in three days, I drove 6 hours in traffic, slept in the nastiest hotel room I’ve ever seen for another 2 hours and actually had a pretty good race. I had a great bike split but a little melt down on the run. Could be that pizza and pop are not appropriate carb loading foods and it caught up to me. No PR, but it wasn’t my worst time either. I took a nap in the parking lot for a few hours before driving home though.

I’m really glad I did it because it was the highlight of an otherwise crappy week.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

Now thats what I call hardcore !
Great job trigirl.

Sleeping in the parking lot for a few hours though…not sure about that.
Kinda dangerous, and it was pretty hot all over the country.

But sounds like you’re home safe, and here’s to a better week.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I just love hard core girls. Way to go!

Good job! And this from someone that if I had to call you an idiot, I would!
