Hamburg World’s is happening in oh about 11 hours… this is the real deal, many of the olympiads still have to earn points (check out latest triathletemag for the complicated world system) - but anyways their tricast video coverage is the real deal (and no sob stories to boot).

all you west coasters or college slackers…it starts in 2 hours. i have to be at work at 6:30am for a boring half day of bond trading, but those of you awake should watch the real live video coverage…
Kemper isn’t racing at World’s as he is waiting for Beijing two weeks later, which is the first Olympic Qualifying race for the US. The first American across the line in the Beijing World Cup gets an automatic Olympic spot.
Robo had an injury, but I’m sure he’s also focusing on Beijing World Cup.
As for Bennett, I don’t know why he isn’t racing. He has been opting for the non-drafting races in the US this year (in which he is still in the running for the $300,000 bonus), so perhaps Australia didn’t take him because he hasn’t been competing on the World Cup circuit.
The Beijing World Cup in just over 2 weeks time is going to be an amazing race, perhaps more so than Worlds this weekend. A lot of countries will be using the Beijing World Cup as an Olympic qualifier (Can, NZ, US) to name just a few.
Well it looks like U23 already went, so in a few hours we will get the elites. As far as bennett goes, I have an interview with him at chicago last week, and while I left it uploading to youtube overnight, i was not too happy to walk into work today and realize that youtube “failed to upload”. gosh!
but yeah, he mentions that he wants to focus on returning usa to the glory days of chortcourse in late 80s, wants to support laura (which is something that brian lavelle also mentions in my interview with him), and he already did lys once last time around and was 4th…
Dano, What did you think of the Jr race? It seems to be European dominated. North America, in general didn’t appear to be in the running with the Jr’s with the exception of a couple Canadian women who appeared close. (Aussies/NZ werent up there either in general)
These races are all sooo competitive so the stress of travel might make more of a difference for Jr’s who aren’t used to it. (??)
I watched the coverage of both races this morning…You’re right…it was def. European heavy at the top.
I know Canada only sent 2 men, and 3 women, that’s all they were able to send. The swims of the Cdn JR men aren’t at that top level speed, they were both almost 60" down out of the water…and then the group of 5 guys got away in the race.
I think the travel might be part of it, but part of it might also be the level of competition that they are used to racing. In Europe, I’d bet their JR races are a lot more competitive than the JR races in North America.
As for the U23 women who just went, 1 North American in the Top 10, 1 Japanese, 1 NZ, 1 AUS, otherwise heavily dominated by Europeans as well.
The U23 men should be interesting…there are going to be some guys that need to get away on the bike…hopefully it dries up (the rain has stopped there right now). I think it will come down to a huge pack coming off the bike…and one hell of a run!
Bennet isn’t racing world cups because the Aussie federation has basically been screwing him. He lives and trains in the US now, so I think they’re a bit miffed and are putting their ‘up and comers’ in the world-cup races. Greg had a bitch of a time even getting into Hyvee where he had a great race. Its a shame, because after a couple injury plagued seasons he really seems to be back on form. One of the few guys who can really excel at both the drafting and non-drafting disciplines with his solid swim/bike and still world class running abilities. Basically sucks for the guy that even though he is whipping up on the rest of the Aussie team he wouldn’t be able to go to the Olympics for them no matter what because of politics.
He’ll be there supporting his wife Laura though Awesome couple and have been psyched to see them doing so well this season.
The top American junior male is currently on a full ride scholarship to run at Stanford, so even though USAT sunk a lot of money into him in the last couple years, I don’t think we’ll be seeing him much while he’s running. The other American juniors are all about even, solid guys, but no one stands out. There is one guy from Southwest Florida, can’t remember his name, he was the strongest junior at the beginning of the year, but I think has a stress fracture.
