I want to ride the half vineman course a few times before the race. i’ll be driving up from Berkeley CA. any advice on where to park and how to best complete the course +20 miles or so. i see it has two transition areas, is there a convenient way to ride the whole course and then get back near T1?
Keep in mind it is a point to point course so you either drop off cars at one end or do a bit extra. Since you want to go extra, I would park at the Kaffe Mocha just off Airport Blvd. Take the Airport exist just north of Santa Rosa and head west (over the freeway). Park in the big lot there…always lots of cyclists around there Sat morning. From there you head west out and catch Westside Road at Wohler Bridge and turn left and follow the bike course in opposite direct to Guerneville and Johnson’s Beach. Then do the whole point to point course. This will add about 15 miles to the total course but you will get to ride both directions during the first 10 mile section which is good since it is the part that is really the only part of the course that is arguably curvy/swervy (and barely that) plus it is very scenic and pretty.
PM me if you need more details…I live in the area.
Yeah, parking at the high school (T2) is the way to do it. It’s a nice 15 mile ride to Johnson’s Beach in Guernville, where the swim and T1 is located.
I would park near the swim & T1 and ride from there. You can ride the course from start to finish. The onc at the highschool (T2) you can ride back to your car (I don’t remember exactly, but somewhere around 15-20 miles). If you are looking for company on the rides, let me know, I might be interested.
ONe final point…if you go my route you can ride the run course from T2 (Windsor High School) back to where you started. Follow run course to La Crema but instead of turning around keep going until you hit a T intersection at Laughlin. Turn left and it takes you back to Airport Blvd and you’re back where you started. It would be good to see it if you are not familiar with it as there are a few rollers. Probably add 7-8 miles to your trip.
