First, to the STers that know my recent chain/reused rivet story, be gentle with the 'I told you so’s.
Plan: 45 miles easy ride followed by 45min-1hr run.
Actual: Headed out about 12 noon here in Northeast Atlanta. About 1 hour into the ride, my chain broke. I averted any nasty fall. Chose not to call the support crew (she was headed out shopping). So…decided to attach shoes and helmet to bike, picked up the broken chain, and started home, running! Pacing was key. I thought motorists hated cyclists before, now I think they hate ‘cyclists who run beside their bikes down the side of the road’ much more. I treated this as training for running with bike out of T1 but with T1 several miles long. After a couple of miles I realized that the road has more debris on it than meets the eye and that the road gets pretty hot at 1pm on a sunny Saturday. If it ever happens to you, running on the painted stripe on the side of the road helps. One cyclist rode past me actually thinking I was practicing running barefoot beside my bike in my cycling clothes down a busy Peachtree Industrial Blvd. I just nodded.
After running about 45 min like this, a fellow cyclist driving by in his truck gave me ride to a nearby LBS, THANKS Roy! They set me up with a couple of PowerLinks and had me on my way to bike the other 30 min home. I called it a day.
Toughens me up for IM training! Just gotta put up with some blistered feet. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. And always remember, you gotta play the hand thats dealt to ya!
