Anyone know the allowable limit I can safely put into my tires? Is there a manufacturer’s limit? Can’t find one on the site.
Thanks
Well, when I didn’t know any better a few years ago, I used some H3 tubulars (with Tufos and tape no less) and put in 180 psi (as high as my Blackburn pump went) and had no problems (other than bouncin’ around and going slower…)
Put in about 9 bar (135 psi) and no more.
Tks for the reply, why do you suggest 135psi? I have read and followed a number of the threads wrt to increased tire pressure increasing rolling resistance. Is this the reason? I’ve ridden them during races at about 150-160psi and had no issues…seemed fast, maybe just felt fast…
Yup - just “felt” fast. Need a little more info though on the tires as size matters ![]()
650 vs. 700 for ex and 19 vs 23 mm for ex and also the exact tire (tubular vs. clincer as well) as a few of companies have a harder casing (like Tufo) that actually do better at higher pressures
I’m thinking it’s a Vittoria Corsa 21mm…dont have it in front of me…
OK - tubular or clincher. 650 or 700?
If tubular and 700cc, I’d run 8-9 bar front and 9 bar rear (now depends on your weight).
If clincher, run 120 psi. Gives a nice “fast” feel and still a decent ride and handling characteristics
take a look at the recommended tire pressure on the zipp site, should be about right
.
The limit will be based on the tubular you use, not the wheel.
Get yerself a set of Tufo’s and pump those babies up to 200 psi.
Why does 650 vs. 700 make a difference? I ride on 650 Conti Sprinters. HED 3c. I keep between 130-140 psi. I weigh 130. I am not a very experienced cyclist, so I have no idea if this is best for me. Any advice?
650 vs. 700 makes a slight diff because you have less volume of air in the 1 inch smaller tire, hence the pressure will be a little higher. Same thing for 19 mm vs. 23 mm tires (but this is very negligible and the main benefit is for aerodynamics). Since the Crr doesn’t really change much with tire pressure, the thing you mainly loose with pumping the tire too much is comfort (assuming you have at least a reasonable pressure in there and not running like 85 psi or something).
Tufos at 200? I think you need to fill them with an inert gas as well.
