I’m getting the race wheels (H3’s) set up for the season, and noticed a significant wobble in the cassette when coasting. When I called Hed, they said that this is relatively common and not a big deal. Mine seems to wobble quite a lot, though, and I’m contemplating having them take a look at it before I glue up the tires, etc.
Yep. Not sure why either. I live in MN and know Anne and Steve personally and I’ve asked them about this. They’ve given me the same answer; its fairly common (has to do with the way they shim the wheel but I may be mis stating them on this) but nothing to worry about. I trust them and have never had any issues with mine in four years of use. It has been a very bullet proof wheel. Good Luck!
So you see the same wobble on yours? I don’t have any reason not to trust them - I just want to make sure that I don’t have a wheel that’s more out of whack than normal.
Yes, I see the same wobble as you do. I’ve never measured the varience but I wouldn’t be suprised if it was .125 - .1875. One thing to remember is its going to be more noticable with a wheel like the HED or a disk in that the wheel is “straight” so any deviation is going to be seen; a spoke wheel may mask this wobble a little. Also, I have had this wobble with other wheels and I’ve never had any issue with any of them. Good Luck!
I was looking at my new, never riden Hed 3 last night and noticed the same wobble. I was worried the cassette was on wrong. My bike shop was about to have one upset customer because this is the second Hed 3 as the first wasn’t even close to true.
I also noticed significant wobble in the cassette when I purchased a hed 3 rear wheel last year. I took it back and they ordered me a new one and the new one was fine. Sure, it may not matter that much, but they obviously can make them straight, so why settle for wobble?
Mine has had the wobble too from the day I bought it. If yours is like mine, I doubt that it’s responsible for chain rubbing. I’ve scrutinized it for a long time on both the workstand and the trainer and am certain that the wobble only occurs when you’re coasting/freewheeling.
HED3 wheels are trued by the use of a shim behind the cassette body. The shim may then cause the cassette to wobble instead of the wheel. I just learned this today from HED. If you remove the cassette body and mess up the shim your wheel will be out of true. I’ve used HED3 wheels for years in both training and racing and love 'em all!
I have the same thing with my HED disk. It worried me, but then I went to my LBS (I didn’t purchase it there, since I got it through a HED promotion with Team USA) and they said it is normal and not a big deal. I raced with it, and it works great - shifts perfect, etc.
