Congrats. Did you do a little victory dance in front of him?
I saw one of the women pros at Hawaii come to a complete stop & mount her bike with the shoes clipped in. I believe she was on the ITU circuit - would’ve thought she would’ve been an ace with the flying mount.
Na, never would do that to anyone, since I still got my butt kicked, and he was hurt.
This sport is all about fun. And I would never pick on an elder.
Now, if I had not just about fell over getting my shoes off the pedals at T2, maybe I would
have beat him out. :o)
Yes, very few folks can do the flying mount and dismount well. It is just not one of the things
I want to worry about. Need more time in the saddle, even though I have NO chance catching
up with the studs who are kicking my butt this season. Am quite happy with my improvement
this season with my focus on swimming. Getting to worlds is more than I ever thought was possible.
It pays to be a good runner, but nonetheless, I’m flabbergasted that you were almost dead even with my T2 time. Like I said, I screwed the pooch in T1 with the wetsuit, so I actually thought you’d get me by more than you did there, but I smoked T2 and you were still right there. Next time you’re racing I’m going to come to watch and bring a video camera. I gotta figure out how you can be that fast running in bike shoes!
Next time I’m going to overshoot the dismount line and see if I can get away with it…
And for the record, I killed everybody in my AG with total T-times and most of the guys in yours (everybody except you, I think).
BTW, congrats on 2nd place. Chavez has been a squatter on the podium for so many years that a lot of races reserve a space for him. He’s brand new and dangerous in 50-54 this year. What can you expect to do with a guy who can produce a 37:03 run split at 50?
I just love it when my computer burps and I lost all I wrote.
Yep, I have always said there are many ways to be fast. So, we were both on the same course, and now
at least have numbers to compare your flying dismount, and my wuss process of putting on socks and shoes.
Yep, when I get into T2, I can FLY with my shoes on. And I lost a few seconds trying to get my stupid helmet off.
So, data is data, you can be fast leaving your shoes on, I again proved it. In my races if I do not have the fastest
T1 plus T2 times, I am always in the top few. I think I had the fastest Transistion time of anyone over 50, and probably
faster than all but a few. Not bad for an old guy!!
I had never heard of Chavez before. I beat him in the swim. I beat him in transistion. He was like only 90 seconds ahead on the bike.
BUT, to lay down a 37:03 on that course, the guy is from another planet!!! Great, another Dean in my AG. Oh well, at least
I can always try for second if he is in the race and maybe have fun trying to beat him out of T2. But, after that, wow.
Why does a person like that not race elite? Same for a few of the other older super fast guys. Wonder why they get their kicks
crushing AGers when they could try and beat the elites?
Again, great to finally meet you and hope your feet heals quickly.
“BUT, to lay down a 37:03 on that course, the guy is from another planet!!! Great, another Dean in my AG. Oh well, at least”
Hmmm… Steve and Dean occassionally train together and they’re practically neighbors (to me as well as each other). I could say it’s the water or something, but I’ve ridden with Dean and the world famous House of Pain riders and in fact the three of us fly the same colors (Forward Motion) and as you can see, I’m not in their league. Well, it obviously ain’t the shirt, so it must be da shoes.
Age groups can suck. In mine, we’ll be trading Tim Lavelle up to 60-64 the same year we get Dean. You get Dean for another year or so and before he moves on, here comes Steve. I really screwed up by being off my game Sunday, because Ric Gonzalez took my AG in 2:23, and I can do that if everything works. Third should have been a lay down. I guess I need to quit screwin’ around and start training again.
That’s exactly what I said at the start line: “Dude, what are you doin’ with the old farts?”
He said, “Hey, I’m one of you now…”
Then he suckered me off line in the swim. I was drafting him and suddenly the guys in the boat were blowing whistles and yelling at us. I looked up and we were about 30 feet left of the first buoy. I figured he was a great choice to draft, what with all his experience there’s no way he’d lead me astray…
No big deal, since it was a straight line buoy and we weren’t taking a shortcut, but I hung a hard right to catch the buoy and Steve went straight. That was the last I saw of him and I ended up breaking the water for myself the rest of the way. That cost me about two minutes, but since I was DNF with a bad Achilles, it didn’t really matter.
Seeing Steve, Dean, Kevin Moats and Joe Boness all in that AG makes me glad I’m not.
Yes, it is an honor to race against such great racers. Now, I beat Steve in the swim and transistions. So, if I can just improve a little on the bike
compared to him, my goal is to just get out of T2 before him.
For any of us, all it takes is one injury and we are done. So, no way do I have any desire to push it. I want to be one of those last guys
in the 80s like french.
Got healed up and we can go at it again next season.
Man, just looked those guys up in the current ranking, yep, they kill me.

“I beat Steve in the swim and transistions. So, if I can just improve a little on the bike

That was my deal with Lavelle for years at Santa Cruz, and I beat him out of T1 regularly and out of T2 on a few, but he ran me over like a slow moving armadillo after that.
“I want to be one of those last guys in the 80s like french.”
See, I figured I’d be winning by now based on what this AG looked like 15 years ago. Sadly, all the guys who kicked my ass then are still racing. There’s fewer slow guys, but that doesn’t help me.
“Got healed up and we can go at it again next season.”
I’m hoping to make a race or two yet this year and rehab to come back strong next year. Folsom is a course I like and I’ve biked 1:07. If I can just get my run working I’ll have a chance to see you come by some time around mile 4. As long as we’re in different AGs, I can live with that.
Dennis, I went 22 in the swim and 1:07 in the bike. I would love to shoot for next
year 21 in the swim, and 1:05 on the bike. Then I should beat Steve out of T2
and then watch him fly by me on the run.
