Case in point - yesterday’s men’s rings. greek guy gets up there doesn’t hold strength moves as long as guys who follow him, and does this little stutter step on the landing and get a 9.865 or something. Greek fans go insane, flags everywhere.
next two guys get up, hold same moves longer, and nail thier landing, but get scores just slightly lower than greek guy. stadium goes predictably insane.
I said to my wife as we were watch it. please please give me some sports with less subjectivity.
The guy after the greek got deducted for bobbling in the handstand, and probably for movement in the rings. Still a great routine, but that’s where I would guess they took off tenths.
I think that might make some people happier, but people already complain about too much gymnastics. They also would have to have the judges release their scoring for everyone, which they probably wouldn’t want to do. If NBC is willing to pay me, I’ll take Tim Daggetts place and use the John Madden telestrater to show you guys every little flaw.
Alright, now that I’ve seen the coverage, that was crap. The crowd should never have a say in the outcome, plus they screwed the athletes that had to go after that. What’s worse, you have Tim Daggett saying he hopes the crowd doesn’t stop until the score is changed. Total crap. Alexi Neimov is a legend in gymnastics, but I could have found my way to his original score without too much trouble.

I hope I never get penalised for movement in the ring…I’d be disqualified in 5 minutes!
Yes, I thought the same thing about that worthless little crapweasle, Tim Dagget. How messed up was that that he wanted them to not stop with the booing? Why don’t they just give the audience members little voting things like they use in America’s Funniest Home Videos? Why have judges at all? Maybe they should just make the whole damn thing an exhibition sport. Let those little girls have periods and be done with it altogether?
In the diving coverage they were very detailed about where the deductions would be taken. It made me a sharper viewer and more appreciative of the sport. Maybe they should do this for gymnastics.
What pisses me of is that NBC showes taped coverage with post event recorded commentary and tries to pass it of as live play by play. It’s totally BS, you can hear the same announcements many times as the give away.Totally BS. The subjectively flopped in the Winter Games, and it happened again this time. there is no credibility to any of it.
It pays to be the Judges favorite.
Barring an obvious crash, it’s all basically pre determined.
I used to work with a foriegn olympic snow skiing judge, he told me all about it.
I came into the olympics being a big fan of the gymnastics, but that was an absolute joke. No, I’m no gymnastics expert, but the way the judges scored the high bar was ridiculous. I would never have thought I would say this, but maybe it is rigged. You’re going to tell me that Hamm’s routine and the Italian’s routine were worth the same score? I don’t think there was a single score they gave on high bar that made any damn sense.
And yeah, that was f’d up what happened with the audience, and it wasn’t really fair to Hamm, et al, but I can hardly blame them. What a joke. Bring on the T&F.
“You’re going to tell me that Hamm’s routine and the Italian’s routine were worth the same score? I don’t think there was a single score they gave on high bar that made any damn sense.”
Yeah, they were worth the same. There were some major form deductions for the guy who won. Hamm’s routine was much cleaner. I didn’t have too much problems with the high bar scores. I didn’t even think the score that got changed was all that bad. Parrallel bars was a different story. That was poor judging.
Francois, I’m sure that you know more than Al Trautwig.
The homeless guy begging for money out at the freeway intersection probably knows more than Al Trautwig - I think we would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t!
“Barring an obvious crash, it’s all basically pre determined”
you mean like Paul Hamm falling flat on his ass and rolling into the judges table during the all-around?? Apparently that wasn’t enought to prevent him from winning the gold.
Leave out the first part of your statement and I agree with you.
