I figure it’s not the most important detail here, but I’m wondering what smashing his head next to the counter means. Does that mean into the counter or into something beside it.
Good for him. If I had a sister, I would torture anybody who messed with her. I’m not personally opposed to tortuing somebody, but I admit it is morally wrong.
I don’t know the context of Biden’s statement, but I mostly find self-aggrandizing stories like this one highly off-putting.
Biden is Charles Bronson in Death Wish all of a sudden. But I’m sure there was a very appropriate reason for relating the story at a women’s rights gala.
Yeah, I realize it’s Joe Biden we’re talking about. Ick.

I think it’s kind of obvious in an “Old school sort of way”. Joe Biden is and always has been for “Women’s right”. He started out by beating up anyone who harassed his sisters.

No he was a little kid. He was afraid he was going to get in trouble from his dad. Have you never told a story about something you did as a kid?

I think the chances of it being a true story are less than 50%.
It means that it is illegal and for good reason. And if angered enough by the actions of another (murder of a child, rape of a daughter, etc), I would have little mentally stopping me from doing it, I would actually probably enjoy it to. Such actions, however internally justified, would certainly be in conflict with laws and ethics of society. Hency why do not support the use of torture for intelligence gathering. We can’t pick and choose what society views as morally right and laws often follow the path. However, I can change my own morals to justify my actions. So wouldn’t that make me immoral in the eyes of others, even if I didn’t veiw my actions as such? Vigilantes, I’m sure feel righteous in their actions in committing murder, torture, etc. on criminals. Society however, disagrees. Any sane vigilante would certainly see their actions as illegal, if justified by them?

I think you’re using the same word to mean two different things. There is “Morality” in the sense of what is right and these are based on different things depending on your belief system but rarely based on only “Whatever you believe”. There is then individual belief, which is what you appear to be talking about, which is not what I would consider morality.
So wouldn’t that make me immoral in the eyes of others, even if I didn’t veiw my actions as such?
Yes, and thus my point of confusion. You’re using the same word to define two different things. It’s the color blind person calling red purple. Just because he sees it as purple does not mean that has changed the fact that it is in fact red. Morality by the same token is not something that is “Individualized” it’s something that must be based on something concrete.
Easiest example that applies to nearly every source of supposed morality is murder, not self defense, accidental death, war etc., but murder. There is nearly no religion, political system etc that defines murder as “Moral”. Thus if you decided that you want to murder someone it does not make murder suddenly “Moral”. Feeling justified does not make it moral etc.
So in speaking of torture if we assume that it is immoral based on something concrete then no matter what it is immoral just as murder is. If I decide it’s ok to torture that does not make it moral.
