Guelph Lake Sprint, who's going?

Anybody doing Guelph Lake this weekend? Anybody done it before? My son and I are both doing the sprint on Saturday and I was wondering what the water was like.

J

I’m planning on doing the olympic on Sunday… never done Guelph before, so don’t know what its like. I’ve heard that there are a bunch of speed bumps at the beginning of the bike course.

Good luck on Saturday.

doing the olympic on sunday. yeah there are two? rolling speed bumps after say 500m? its no big deal, and its the beginning of the course where you get out of the park so you won’t be going all out anyway.

personally I think the water is ok. some people find it murky, dark and gross. one year I found it super calm, last year I found it a tad choppy/windy, but nothing serious.

I’ll be there on Sunday. Thinking of racing on my new Soloist with shorty bars. Can’t wait!

Thanks guys. The bumps wouldn’t bother me so much if I hadn’t wrenched my back on Sunday.

Any idea of usual water temps?

“some people find it murky, dark and gross.”

you forgot stinky.

My wife and I will both be there. She’ll be in the Tri-a-tri, I’m doing the sprint.

Might be out to volunteer on Saturday. I’ll wear my m-dot hat (blue).

If you see a MDot visor cap in Yellow, that is likely me.

I am doing it on Saturday, for the third time. Last year at this event, I witnessed some guy catapault himself off the second speedbump, taking himself and someone else out of the race - so it definitely is something to watch for. He ended up bloody on the road with a smashed collarbone.

Swim - The water might be weedy by this time in the summer. Overall, pretty decent. With the sprint being at 2pm it’ll hopefully be still wetsuit worthy.

Bike - Speed bumps and a few hills. Coming back in is usaully faster due to winds.

Run - Rolling hills, with one larger hill (with a turnaround at the top) just before the finish sprint

Hope it helps,

Sounds like you’re describing “Fake Lake”? It is a man made resevoir and would be the only place you can swim in Guelph.

Guelph was my ex’s hometown. We even lived there for a short time but she ended up in B.C. and I migrated to eastern Ontario. I should do the tri there some day just for old time’s sake.

Thanks all. I will be easy to spot. Just look for the last guy out of the water and I’ll be riding my funnybike (650 front, 700 rear) dark brown. It WILL be wetsuit worthy for me as my swimming make it appear as if there are hills in the water. Big honkin’ Tour Day France hills (sorry. had to put the Bob Roll reference in).

See you tomorrow.

The temp for Speed River Hanlon is usually pretty close to the temp in Guelph Lake. I used this site heading in to the XTC (formerly Xterra Canada) race in July…for those that need a quick converter… http://biphome.spray.se/nebrer/temp.htm

So right now Hanlon is at 20C (68F) but has been topping out at about 22-23C (72-73F) - this info can been seen under “water quality” on the left hand side.

Hope this helps.

So? How was it? Beautiful weather its turning out to be; seemed a little chilly in the morning. (I’m curious and I also want to know for my race tomorrow :P)
