Does anyone have any info about this bike:
I thought they were all alum, I wasn’t aware there was any made out of carbon, or were these for the team only?

If I recall properly - that was made by CarbonBike or Kestral and re-branded for the team. There is also a chance that this particular frame is one of a few that were stolen from a hotel hallway while folks were getting bags or something.
That is a velodrome town so it is probably a racers prototype bike that is getting unloaded to pay the mortgage

The orginal protos where in AL, they then switched to carbon in the later versions of SB I before the SB II came out. The bikes were fast for the time, but they were full of quirks and one off parts that led to a lot of issues with them.
The headset used washer like bushings instead of bearings, the q factor was really bad on them. The rear wheel was held on with no standard allen bolts that broke real easy, you need custom washer stacks for each one.
there were the original tiemeyer als, then the carbon sb1 (the one in the link), then the sb2 (no top tube etc).
that bike uses a 24"front, a narrow bb etc…
and it a track rear-end (120mm)

An earlier version of the bike at speed under Kent Bostick at the olympic trials in 96 T-town velodrome. This version has a fairing under the BB you’ll notice
.
both indytri and sweenys links are great… they were also later in the process when traditional dropouts were gone and the dedicated spacers (for each chainring/cog combo) and small allen keys were in place.

Yeah, i wanna say it was the last version before the SBII was launched that had the spacers, and god did a lot of those bolts get stripped out. Personally i think the SBII was the better bike. I know Erin Hartwell does, but then again he won a medal on it, so that might tend to bias ya some.
Just more obscure info, the hand holds on the base bars were wood…
We’ve got one of those SBII here in our office.
Looks like Bostick is on a wood track, not T-Town.

yeah, erin posted about those frame on the FGF post…
he mentioned that the dedicated spacers worked well when new, but wore out and created slope with use…

More obscure info, I recall that the SBII didn’t have any headset bearings. Just bushings to keep the steerer in place.
There were no SB1 frames made from carbon but several of the frames had carbon overwrapped on top of the aluminum. I am told these were made for Nothstein and Hartwell. They may have also used aluminum forks with an overlay of carbon. (first time caller, long time listener)
So do you think that is what is on ebay, carbon wrapped over alu?
Absolutely. These had foam fillets around the tube’s joints, then the whole bikes were wrapped.

did you work on the bikes? Did you know Stephen Kent (boudin)?
Looking back, it seems that GT was so far ahead of anyone else that there should have been no catching them. If not for the untimely death of Richard Long, one of the company founders and the vision behind the rise of GT, they would probably be innovating and dominating today.
amen…I have been a GT fan since I was a kid, BMX, MTN bikes, road and tri. I love my Xizang and Vengeance. My hope is that someday a private investor will buy the company back from Crappy Bike Unlimited and it will rise once again, one can only dream. Anyone have some $$$ they want to spare?
Have you seen the pictures of the Carbon Fiber Zaskar and Carbon I-drive on mtbr.com? I think GT is about to rise to the top again in the mountain bike seen. I have a new 2001 I-drive Team that I wouldn’t trade for anything, well, except for maybe that new carbon Zaskar!
