That’s fantastic!!!
I wonder if they will have the same thing for the E.T. Run in August? It’s held at midnight in the desert near Area 51, in Nevada.

My company has warehousing in the Subtropolis. I visit them once in a while (I’m in SC).
Curious… how are the caves as a racing venue?
Oh my god. You have a race in CAVES? That’s amazing…
It’s the venue of the future. Because of global warming, Al Gore has purchased the rights to the caves for the next 100 years so all future races and events have to pay him a rental fee. The man is an entrepreneurial god…first the internet, now caves. I stand in awe.
They are man-made caves. I think it’s the largest underground complex in the world - over 1,000 acres.
As for racing down there, you drive right up to it. The entrances are in the side of some very small bluffs. So you don’t go down to enter or anything. It is pancake flat. Mostly paved or concrete floors, constant temp year-round in the mid 50’s? Here, maybe this brochure will give details & correct my ramblings. http://www.huntmidwest.com/pdfs/subtropolis_bro.pdf
Anyway, you know it has to be big if they are putting 3,000 people in there to race.
I’ll be the one in the mexican wrasslin mask.
Thanks, but I won’t be running in it. I was just curious about your impression of running in the “caves”. I didn’t want to dissuade you with my comments. But, it appears you have done this event before.
I don’t know that I could handle the hard floors and diesel odor over the course of a race. Hopefully, the race is held in a different area than where our warehouse is and is better ventilated.
Have a great race!
It is much better now that in years past. Parts of the course USED to go over gravel floor sections.
3,000 runners + gravel + confined area + no airflow = dusty, choking conditions.
Now, it is all paved.
But even so, it is true - you would never classify the air in there as springtime fresh. ![]()
btw, they now have explicitly put a “no alcoholic beverages” rule in place. Thanks to me & a couple of my friends. You’re welcome.
Sounds like a fun event. Over in Montreal they have a 5k run in the tunnels/malls which criss-cross the underground. They had about 700 people last year, dont think they told people to wear sunglasses though ![]()

Excellent, you can pick up an expresso and a croissant on the way.
I love the smell of radon in the morning. Smells like victory.
Don’t breathe too deep.
I think I’ll take my Garmin, to make sure the course is accurate.
