So I’m ready to chuck my 7-year old, $100, walmart grill and replace it with something nicer. Most likely going Weber. Question is, moving from their 620 to their 650 model, you get a rotisserie (and infrared burner) and a smoker box with burner. I can’t say that I’ve ever used a rotisserie, but would it be worth it to spend the extra ~$150 to get the option.
Does anybody that has one actually use it? I like to cook, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I did, but not too sure…
things like that eventually get the bypass from me. they take up room and always seem to let me down in the long run–so i tend to be a fundamentalist (very little to no fancy extras). my thought is to get a big round webber grill, a good pair of tongs, and get grillin’!
i’m with you. charcoal is where it’s at. can’t beat the flavor and the authentic experience.
(i’m the grill master at my house. my husband is happy to sit down and relax while i do the work. LOL
BTW, i made your hash brown potatos tonight. they’re soooo good. i make mine “trash browns” with sour cream and hot sauce on top. Evan likes his as a regular hash brown with carmelized onion on top, with sea salt. yum)
Get the Weber without the rotisserie and spend the $150 on a Weber Kettle grill. You’ll use it more than the rotisserie and can learn the wonders of charcoal when you have the time.
Another vote for the weber kettel. Charcoal takes a bit more prep time since you have to get the fire started but you can do a lot more cool things and the flavor is sooooo much better.
Your basic Weber charcoal grill. I once had an expensive fancy gas grill but found that it wasn’t like my old Weber I had for many years. I ended up giving it to a friend in exchange for her buying me a $60 Weber. I love that damn grill! However, if you like and need all the bells and whistles…
I have a weber genesis silver. The wife got me a rotisserie for my birthday this year but I haven’t had the chance to use it yet. We do a lot of cooking and BBQing on it. Best has been pork shoulder for about 8 hours of smoking which comes out great.
Dunno anything about the infra red gizmo but it seems a bit over the top. I got a cast iron smoker box from ace hardware for about 10 bucks that works OK. If I’m smoking something for a long long time I just use heavy duty aluminum foil or one of the small foil pans you can get from the grocery, works just as well and can hold more chips.
I don’t have a kettle (charcoal) but will get one once we move to the burbs or move to a place in the city that has more space. The gas grill is nice because it’s hot and ready to go in about 5 minutes as we get home late from work/gym and I can throw something on in about the same time as I could cook it on the stove or oven.
I will be the dissenting voice. I have 3 grills and I use the rotisserie frequently. It is really good for large cuts of meat like prime rib, pork loin, chickens or turkeys. I entertain a lot so I cook large chunks of meat. For example:
My big hang up is that this grill purchase should last me for a long time, and if its something that I want in the future, I’m a bit SOL. I do a decent amount of slow cooking in the oven, but I’ve never had a grill that worked well enough to do it outside.
I have a kettle grill, and its fine for a weekend, but its just not practical for everyday use (with my schedule). I also have a buddy that has one of the big smokers, but I’m not sure that would make a lot of sense, and I don’t want another piece of equipment.
The difference in list price would lead me away from the rotisserie, but the street price is so close that I’m leaning that way…
it’s probably a small fraction of people who really use the extra whistles enough to justify the price. maybe you will be amoung the small fraction of people. regardless though if you want it, then get it. maybe you’ll use it alot, or maybe just once. either way, buying decisions are emotional, so if you need someone to say “do it”, then i will.
I have never paid as much as either of those webers cost. Two of my grills are custom made and they didn’t cost that much. The grill I use the most was a house brand Home Depot gas grill that got Consumer Reports best buy rating. It is awesome. My tailgating grill was only a $1000.
That is the grill I take to football game tailgates. Tailgating is serious business here. It will do a 120 lb. pig, 20 chickens, or 4 large turkeys. Infinite burger and dog action.
