Is anybody here riding a griffen? I wondering because somebody locally offered me a Griffen Dave Scott signature series frame for fairly cheap. Are these pretty nice frames? is the dave scott one good? does anybody have the Dave Scott model? Tell me about griffen.
Great frames! Very unique for one. Boron/carbide or whatever pressed powder stuff they are made of makes for a very nice ride. A little heavy (if that matters), but very well made. Owner/founder can often be found at the major tri races around (esp IM races). I had one of their road bikes about 5 years ago. Not sure whey I got rid of it ![]()
I liked my Griffen as well. Mine was too big, tried to get another but got a better deal elsewhere. Very comfortable ride but was stiff enough to transfer IM power. Yep, on the heavy side if you worry about that sort of thing. D. Scott’s model is also fairly slack. They used to have the dimensions on their website.

Where I’m at you don’t see many Griffens - OK not any Griffens. They also seem to keep a pretty low advertising profile. But I remember commenting to some friends how there were a TON of Griffen’s at IMCDA. Not sure if there is a prominent Griffen dealer in that area, or if they are just much more common outside my local triathlon scene.
It’s very strange that Griffen have not updated their products for years. Compared with all the carbon out there they realy don’t seem to have much to offer anymore… shame.

Yes, I still love my Bitch (her name): http://www.flickr.com/photos/8737154@N04/817797412/in/set-72157600832840566/
and I’m sexin’ her up with carbon cranks.
I absolutely LOVE how she rides…nice and stiff, and VERY aerodynamic.
Since I got her in 2000, I keep thinking I should get a new tri bike…but I don’t see a real reason to…but if I DO it will probably be another Griffen.
Unfortunately, I know nothing about the Dave Scott frame, but if it’s B2C like my Vulcan, it’s probably nice.
My wife and I both ride Griffen bikes. We met Tony, the owner, last year when he was up in Canada trying to expand the business. I think he takes the approach of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” - though I’ve been toying with some changes in SolidWorks that I’d like to discuss with him. The frames are stiff and smooth at the same time thanks to the MMC materials. You need to take it for a spin to really appreciate the ride quality.
The specs on the Dave Scott edition can be found here. It looks to be similar to the Kompressor Vulcan which is what my wife rides. They were on the pricey side when new, and unfortunately, don’t hold value well (like most bikes) - but they came with a lifetime warranty and cheap re-painting if you ever wanted to send it back to the factory. Send me a PM if you want more info on the company - I’m not affiliated, but have had the pleasure of keeping in touch with them since buying the frames.
Here’s a non-ST approved pic of the bikes - I’ll get around to a photoshoot specifically for here someday soon.
Cheers,
Bryan

I like the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it approach” but aero seatstays, horizontal dropouts and internal cable routing would get him more sales; especially at the price point he is aiming for. Now whether the consumer is right or wrong on the importance of these issues versus the ride quality doesn’t much matter, it’s where they spend their dosh.

Agreed. The front triangle of the bike is pretty sexy, the rear triangle is a bit of a caboose. That’s where I’ve been doing some modeling to see how best to clean it up. I know he has some limitations in the material that make it difficult to work with, so that has to be considered in the design.
Maybe someday… but for now, I’m still pretty happy with what I’ve got.
Cheers,
Bryan
Griffen frames are great - super stiff but not harsh for long rides, sort of like titanium. Mine was my first tri bike and I labsolutely oved it. Customer service is also EXCELLENT. Crashed mine last year and am in the process of having it realigned + repainted (custom paint job) by the folks at Griffen. They are good people and real easy to deal with. Zero complaints about the bike or the company
I agree about Griffen’s customer service. My buddy was in the Marines when he bought his frame. Before shipping overseas, he realized that his FD hanger was cracked. It was an older model with the hanger riveted on. He asked me to take care of it while he was gone. Long story short- Whole front end of the bike is new and whole bike was repainted. Cheap. All within 3 weeks, including transit times.
