Just read the slowtwitch interview with Greg Bennett. Im a big fan of his, he seems like a good dude and Im always happy to see him win but Ive got some mixed feelings about his switch to the US with an eye on London. Seems like this happened for Beijing with Matt Reed, another good dude, grabbed a spot from Potts and a few others who actually would give a shit about racing for national pride and ended up 32nd. I think the Olympics are all about a dream to represent your country, not an auction to see who you can represent for your personal glory. Just my .2
Dude. Did you even follow the lead up to the last olympics? You realize that if it wasn’t for Matt, there would only have been 2 US representatives? He was out travelling the world, securing the last spot while the rest of the US team was training…
Besides Greg is now a US citizen so piss off.
post # 3… BAM! right in the kisser.
hey…he married an American, which will make him a citizen. He has a right to pursue a slot just like anyone else, IMHO.
Popcorn.
I’m actually quite fond of Mr. Bennet. He married a great American gal, is a classy competitor and emigrated from his homeland to this country through legal channels. I’m happy to have him here on several levels. Go get some Greg!
You are entitled to your own opinion though…whatever floats your boat.
You didn’t hear? We (the USA) traded Finman to Australia for Greg Bennett. I’m fairly sure they were drunk when the deal was made, but anyway good luck with Finman Australia.
Consider the irony that Greg would be the second triathlete to switch to the stars and stripes in the hopes of an easier path to the Olympics. Usually it’s US athletes representing foreign countries in hopes of lower qualifying standards…kinda shows where we stand in tri (at least ITU-wise).

x2,
btw it was Kemper who got the third spot instead of Potts.
But then, do you complain about the roughly 30% of Nobel prizes the US got from folks who were born (and educated) in a foreign country? or about Meb racing for the US?
Or…Paula Newby-Fraser winning Hawaii 8 times? ![]()
Are you proud of the fact that one of the greatest female triathletes of all time is from the USA or would you prefer for all her achievments to be credited to Zimbabwe?
.
I wish every-one coming to the US and becoming a citizen were 1/2 the caliber Greg is - and I’m talking about him as a person, not an athlete. (my opinion is based on what I’ve read as I do not know him). And as others have said, he’s doing it the right way, marrying a US citizen, paying taxes, etc. Although, I’ll bet he could out-swim/run most that sneak into the country.
As for the comment on Matt Reed, He posted some time ago about this topic and he seemed to be very “PRO AMERICA”. A lot more than most American born citizens.
I think its great he’s trying to make the US team and at 40, it would be very cool to see him make the team. Its not like they are giving him a slot. He will need to earn it.
