I am signed up for 3’s. It is my first year training asa “triathlete” and not a cyclist, so I am a bit nervous. Also my first cat3 race. I basically have spent 0 time above 300 watts(160# here).
On the other hand I am well rested and have a great new diet. We’ll see what happens.
It should be interesting. I think I can hang “Middle of the pack” in the TT. Circuit race I think I can hang in for a pack finish. And App Gap stage, whatever happens happens.
I have done a good few 3.5 hour tempo/endurance rides for HIM bike leg training, so hopefully that’ll help.

My longest ride of the year so far is 66 miles and I have only done 3 other rides over 50 miles. I am not worried about this race. TT is only 5.7 miles. Circuit race is flat, easy to sit in the pack. Mad RR is so long for lower cats 3/4/5s, nobody is going to ride aggresively, so it should not be that hard to hang in until the last 3 miles. Crit, well it’s only 20 miles and if I am not in GC contention I will probably not even show up to race it.
Look for Tim Brown, from The Bike Rack of Washington DC, to dominate the Cat 3 race, although not sure if he has a TT bike. He is going to cause you lots of pain over the weekend. I think he has teammates there, and they love to employ the relay attack method to turn everyone’s legs to jello. Cheers.
Your training sounds about like mine except I don’t have anything over 50 miles outside of two solid 3.5 hour long 66 milers (at least these happened in early-mid August so they will help for this race). I’ve got a spatter of TT’s all of which I finished last place and a few tri’s. I also have nothing over 300 watts (not really needed for most any tri I would be doing), which is sort of what scares me, but whatever.
I am also not planning on doing the crit unless I am in contention. Monday is “Whatever you want, honey” day and there is so much to do up there. At least so much amazingly fresh food!!!
For me, I am in NJ. We’re driving up Friday morning at 2am!!!
No TT bikes allowed so it doesn’t matter. 15 minutes is a good cat3 TT time. Last year I was at 16, I hope to come somewhere in between.
No I am racing 4s, hence the lack of worry. I have raced twice thie year, a 3/4 crit this year and 4 road race and was able to sufficiently impersonate a bike racer in both events, so I figure my masquerade can continue this weekend. It may be light’s out on Sunday;)
I think you’ll do just fine as long as you leave the compression socks on. Good luck!
I bought two pairs after seeing how they helped Murphy’s Law. Only thing is I will not wear them out of the house (unless I am wearing long pants.).
I did not get compression socks, but I have a 202 tubular wheel set I am borrowing. My bike just dropped 2 pounds!!! I’ve also been drinking beet juice!
green mtn - 9/4 - toughman 9/13 - tour of catskills - 9/19 - bassman 10/4
that’s an aggressive schedule, two very hilly stage races and a half IM in 3 weeks. I’m still debating doing toughman the week before the catskill stage race. catskill is for sure, toughman 50/50 right now.
thanks… my schedule is nuts, and i have no idea if i will complete it. i really want to, but we’ll see if my body agrees (and mind… after this weekend). This is what i get for not competing all summer and then i start to say “hey … season is about to disappear on me!!! better do some races” but really, these are all great races i think!
I would think the main issue is to mentally recover from each stage race. the stages and distances are not that long, but I noticed that it drains me mentally to stay focused for 4 days on one subject - riding hard and not getting dropped. it should be a good “training block” for you though.
I did catskills and toughmans last year, but the were further apart. two great races though, you are right.
This sounds like a cool event…I’ve been sort of looking around for something like this for next year, so can you please do a RR if possible? Thx in advance.
40 seconds slower than last year for the TT, and 1 category higher (3 vs 4). Not a great start! Gave up power for endurance though, not much I can do about it!!! I am hoping the endurance pulls through for me on day 3 when others are more tired? Not looking for anything crazy but maybe can stick with the lead pack until the final few miles.
PJ - I finished mine in 16:12…I am usually within 30 secs to 60secs of my friend Cary on a course like this. His time last year (he hasn’t gone yet this year) would put him 90 seconds ahead of me.
The headwind on the false flat played a major role. I expect (maybe I should say PRAY) times are slower this year!!!
