I’m watching the Tour of Cali and saw an ad for these that supposedly keep produce fresh longer. I’m always throwing out produce so it would be great if this really works. Anyone use this product or something similar that works?
My wife uses the bags and canisters and swears by them. According to her, she’s able to keep produce fresh for weeks instead of days.
I use those bags that you put the produce in at the grocery store. Keeps food forever.
IMO those “green bags” are a total rip-off. My apartment-mate had some, and they worked no better than a regular plastic bag.
EDIT: Another good idea would be to just buy less, and buy more often, so that you don’t have a bunch that goes bad at once. That’s what I’ve started doing.
+1 on Occam.
I tried the green bags. Didn’t work for me. Your mileage may vary.
I am now buying less more often. A bit of a PITA, but considering the amount of produce/fruits I eat worth it not to wast it.
I was given some as a gift, for me the seem to work great, however I have noticed that many of the produce bags available in the grocery store are now made of a similar plastic and when I use those they seem to work as well. I like the “green bags” since they are a little thicker and last a long time, but then I bring my produce bags with me to the grocery store, I have developed a real aversion to anything disposable except toilet paper and have been using the same green bags for over a year now.

My 8 year-old daughter saw the infomercial last year and was terribly impressed. For Christmas last year, she insisted on buying me (I’m the cook in the family) some at the local “As Seen on TV” store in the mall.
Between ourselves, my wife and I laughed ourselves sick, but of course I had to use them…hell, she spent her own money on the silly things and was so excited she could hardly stand it. I’ve been using them for a couple of months now…primarily for fresh fruits and veggies, and believe it or not, I see a difference. I can’t explain it. I really don’t believe it’s anything other than a cheap, green tinted bag, but it definitely keeps certain things fresh longer than a regular food storage bag.
I’m still not sure that I could convince myself to buy some on my own though…but damn it, they seem to work!
Various gases, temperature and humidity are involved in the ripening of fruits (and maybe veggies too) so it’s possible that a specially designed plastic bag could extend the storage life of produce.
