Did anyone here do this race last year?

I’m thinking of doing this one instead of Stoney Creek cuz it is on my club schedule, it is different open water swimming and it looks like a lot of fun.

I did not race it, but a number of members of my club did. From what I understand, the swim begins 1500 meters offshore - they take you out there on the boat that runs to PIB and you jump off the boat to start the swim.
I also understand the course requires a good amount of beach running.
So, they have attempted to set it up as a preview of ‘Escape from Alcatraz’. The race is also a qualifier for Alcatraz.
I did this race last year. Nicely run.
The location is awesome. Nothing at all to complain about.
The swim is different this year. Thus can’t comment, but it sounds real cool to get dropped my a boat and swim to shore.
The bike is very scenic. Not very hard. I would not call it flat, but the hill are gradual and on the back 1/2 of the course.
The run is difficult. Not much on hard surfaces. Start with a long beach run then into the woods. After that there is an out and back on a concrete pier that is almost like going up and down steps, but very gradually. Back to the beach and then more woods. Some of the sand was fairly hard, but some on the back half was deep and loose.
THis was an interesting race.

If you are in a club in the mideast region then you really shouldn’t do this race. Give the other clubs a chance.

I did the du last year and jumped in the pool this winter to learn to swim and am looking forward to the tri this year. The run is tough but a lot of fun. Definitely do some sand running before you go. I allowed myself a moment to take in the sun over the beach as I was running last year and actually enjoyed trudging through the sand for that moment. The longest run along the beach is close to the water so the sand was pretty well packed on that stretch. My wife also had a good time relaxing on the beach while I was on the bike and then was able to catch quite a bit of the run. It is a fun race and Fat Rabbit always gives out great schwag.
