Got paid $1? Well, that isn’t exactly how it works …

Thank you. That is a real cyclocross handup. Don’t want rroof to give folks the wrong impression about the cross community.

I have not been in a race with handups yet, but I have one on Saturday (Ice Weasels, and I am racing SS) where I think they will have handups.

How does the handup work? Do you just take it? I have seen pictures of handups where it is like dollar bills rubber banded to random stuff. Do you have to carry the random stuff (dolls, stuffed animals) for the rest of the race. Basically I want to understand the etiquette, because I don’t want to come across like I have no class.

That picture with the girl, do you get the girl the girl or just the dollar bill?

Help a brother out.

Bottom line, get money. 1st rule about handups is there are no rules, if you see cash grab it.

General handup etiquette:

#1 - it is technically illegal (outside assistance) - you must carry your own nutrition. Yeah, usually beer, tequila, etc. (FRS for kids today). Unless a UCI race, most officials “look the other way”
#2 - you will generally see hand-ups near/in sand pits (literally dollar bills sticking up) or on hills/run ups.
#3 - in the lead/series positions, most won’t go for it, so don’t bother. Just heckle away.
#4 - Yeah, just grab it! Remember, the crowds can really make cross and most of them are racers as well, so they appreciate the effort!
#5 - General dollar bills rule: it is often a bit difficult to get, but not always. Get it, put under shorts leg gripper when able or teeth if climbing/can’t stop. If tights over the top, down the neck in the jersey.
#6 - don’t expect many “quality” beverages and don’t think that whatever vessel you see is what you think. Nothing like grabbing a can of Old Milwaukee (bad enough) only to take a big gulp of Cuervo Gold.
#7 - if money attached to stuff or grabbing a big stuffed donkey, etc. it is common etiquette to ride with it for a short while to please the crowd, then discard on a more desolate area. Major props if you keep onto it until the same place on the next lap.

I wish they would hurry up and come out with some affordable disc brake cross bikes so i could finally blow some more money and enter some races. 2012 may be the year!!

That’s pretty fantastic. Enough to make me cross-curious. #6 is brutal!

Yes, you have to carry the random stuff for at least a short bit. That girl looks pretty random to me…she’s yours for as long as you can carry her!

You should try a bacon handup. Yes, it’s been done in NorCal. That’s a ccx race tailor-made for Rappstar.

That’s it. Next bike I buy is going to be a cross bike.

I handed up a (closed) bottle of beer at a race a few weeks ago. Guy stuck it in his jersey pocket. Hope he didn’t crash on his back later.

Alright - from the same race as my first photo this Sunday (get to choose):

The main area for heckling and handups in the Chicago Cross Cup is called “Bacon Alley.”
