“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, then perhaps he hears the beat of a different drummer.” At least that’s what I tell myself when I get passed by fat people in the pool. My swimming drummer is depressed and in no rush.

An Air Force triathlete we met at the armed forces tri hosted a bunch of USMC runners once year for Boston and the day before the race he took us for a bit of a run in this area. He said once it warmed up, that was the only place he swam. Two 4K workouts a week and he was good for a mid-18s 1500m swim in the 55 degree water of Point Mugu. If only he could have run a bit faster he might have beaten Mike Hagen for the Armed Forces championship …

Back in the 80s when I lived in Boston, and long before triathlon was in my vocabulary, I used to ride my old ten speed out to Walden, swim for an hour, then ride back. A primitive kind of duathlon, I guess. I never once saw anyone in a wetsuit.

“Or perhaps he is just a weirdo”

I envy people with the ability to do that outside of the summer months. I’ve tried doing a couple of laps of Walden without a wetsuit in April and in October and both times my body became so numb on the way back that I had trouble moving. Took me half an hour to stop shivering.

Or in the case of my swimming, “drowning in a controlled manner.”

Borrowing a state park parking pass is a form of theft.
Henry would not approve.

At that time of day you don’t need one anyway.
