Grading IRONMAN's 70.3 Worlds Broadcast

I can’t speak for how these Commentators now and what they are advised behind the scenes, but I do remember years ago with the then ITU and IRONMAN were at each other’s throats and threatening legal action back and forth, when I was on the Commentary Team for the World Triathlon Championships for CBC in Canada in 1992 and 1994, we were advised by ITU Officials to not mention the “I” word! :grinning:

TBH they should use the coloured swim caps and have a country flag and your number on the centre strip so that everyone can see who it is.

A non wetsuit swim with skin suits is impossible to identify from tri suit unlike ITU.

Soccer and Rugby players have been wearing GPS units for 10 years or so. For triathlon though, I wonder what this will be like as the units our players use are the size of a deck of cards.

Like you can do the live tracking with Catapult or Mac Lloyd if you want but it can be garbage data at times. It’s better once it is downloaded. Not exactly sure how these things would work for racing tbh.

I’m surprised this isn’t also an opportunity for wetsuit sponsors to get buy their athletes some exposure. Is there anything stopping giving them different coloured wetsuits )or at least the arms)?

Time, money, value, doesn’t showcase the “mainstream” version that you can purchase, etc.

Take the two articles we just did on the wetsuits of the top 10 swimmers. Those are all the models and colors that you can buy right now (minus Hayden’s, which is technically last year’s color in that Orca suit, but you can still find it at retailers versus direct from Orca). That’s what most brands are looking for.

I can’t believe triathletes don’t have their names on the back of their trisuits

Oh wow what a fantastic idea. If only they didn’t wear skin suits or wetsuits in the swim. You would be able to see it when their butt isn’t actually in the water.

Good points.

I get what you are saying - for the general public. But the broadcasters paid to give information on the world championships should be able to identify the main players in the game.

You are right I was talking about the general public

The T100 racers at least have them on the front (and back? Can’t recall), and I noticed more athletes putting it on their kits even if they weren’t T100 athletes. It makes sense from a branding and fan standpoint for sure.

T100 required surname front + back, plus country (flag/colours/initials) and the PTO logo. If an athlete thinks they have a chance of a wildcard it’d make sense for them to include this in their 2025 race suit design (and a ‘between the shoulder blades’ pocket)
logo

Totally - but also - makes sense for most athletes to do it honestly…
