Is there one? I’d like to race with one so i can do better lap splits on the run but i know the garmin 305 wont handle that.
I only do short stuff so putting my garmin on in t2 would be a waste of time.

I just have my 305 wrapped on my bars, already turned on, so I start the timer as I leave T1. Then put it in my back pocket as I am riding back to T2.
I also mainly do short races, and the extra couple seconds makes up for itself with proper run pacing.
The best part of racing with GPS is comparing splits. We all know courses arent always accurate, but to get a real pace comparison (expecially run) between races is crucial.
Last season I went the expensive route and now have the edge 305 and the forerunner 305, so one stays on the bike, the forerunner is under my hat in T2, and I put it on running the first mile.
do you wear a watch on the swim?
I like know my whole time and i would probably be over the top if i was wearing two watches while on the run lol
Grant
I will never make the mistake of swimming with it again. Not good news.
I guess I dont worry about overall time, but yes I have worn 2 watches.

What afletz said…
You can put a velcro strap on the 305. Use that with the Polar bar mount and you’re really not losing any time as you can un-velcro it and toss in on your wrist coming into T2.
But, WTF would you want the 305 while using your SRM? Just buy a polar watch w/laps and toss that on in T2 while using your chest strap with your SRM on the bike.
I figure Garmin has a few tricks up their sleeve with a GPS-enabled power device…but my guess is it will be PowerTap and not SRM or Ergomo.
Sorry I miss explained that. The 305 i have is watch not the bike mounted one. The Srm will stay on the bike thats what i want to use on there if i am biking outside i just throw the 305 on my wrist so i have the gps course from it.
I have a nike watch that i use for laps and total time during races, i was just hoping for something a little more accurate on teh run course. and so i can see my pace more readily. If i know it the whole mile i normally run a little bit faster since i know i am going to slow. But then again i am probably being overally geeky.
Grant
You are being overly geeky. The technology doesn’t exist (I don’t think) that will provide you accurate, real-time, exact pace. My solution is that I use my 305 and have it set to display average pace. it provides a pretty accurate view of how fast you’re running without seeing all the peaks and valleys.
Yeah i use the average on the 305, the realtime sucks but i can tell by the trend on the average if i am slowing or picking up the pace.

I started putting my 305 in TWO plastic baggies and tucked it under my swim cap. This has worked fine…just slap in on your wrist as you enter T1 and you have accurate splits for the whole race. I think there is a risk of the baggies leaking, but I’m just crazy enough to do it anyway |;)
It appears everyone is talking about something different. Are you looking for something waterproof to RUN or SWIM with?
Since you have an SRM, I’m assuming you’ll use that in a race. Correct?
If so, you use (can) a Polar HR Strap.
It would make most sense (assuming RUN above), to use a Polar HRM for the run. They have a new models that have speed/pace built it. But, I’m not sure your signal can go to both the SRM and Polar. My guess is that it will…
As for the 305…the watch version is MUCH better and fits better than the Edge on a bike (with the Polar mount). But, IMO…your 305 is pretty much useless now, minus drawing lil fun routes of where you went.
Here’s my road bike…too tired to install the SRM today as I’m drilling a hole for the sensor mount (so I rode with the 305 today). More pix once it’s completely built and ready to be deem’d erotica.

Okay here we go.
SRM- racing, training outside.
Garmin 305- Run training, maping courses for the Computrainer.
Nike watch - race time, splits during race based on mile markers.
What i want is this - a GPS watch that is waterproof for a race so when i get to the run i have my full race time. and be able to see constant mile pace so i know how fast i am really running before i get to a mile marker and figure out the mile was too slow.
Basically i want the function that the garmin has of avg lap pace. But be able to run the whole race in it.
Don’t care about a HR monitor for races. Doesn’t polar use a thing on your shoe? does that give avg mile pace and can you use it in the water?
Grant
Polar. Yes. Yes.
It kinda confuses me why you wouldn’t use the HR strap with your SRM while racing…
Because essentially it doesn’t tell me anything besides that i have a high hr.
I’ve done 3 5ks in the last 3 months. each one my avg hr was 200ish. for only a little over 2 hours i’m not gonna have HR issues that would cause me to slow down. Well besides as newbz so effectively put it a heart attack might slow me down but not my HR.
If you have some reasoning behind it let me know however.
What polar do you recommend? Sorry if i come off with an attitude on here don’t mean to. Just giving my reasonings and sometimes how i type i sound like an ass.
Grant
Are you drinking beer at the frat house tonight?
I’m talking about using the HR (strap) with the SRM, not running silly. As far as I’m concerned, if you’re looking at your HR while running in an Oly triathlon, you’re not running fast enough!
If you need to understand why to use the HR with power, that’s another thread! ;o)
No i understand in training. But thats my question why would i use a HR strap on the bike except in training. Its the same principle as the run. I do use it when i am riding on my CT, or running outside.
And no i don’t drink.
Grant
I use a Timex watch throughout the enire event. My HR strap is on and I use my SRM during the bike. I do not use HR during the run. My thought is that I need to run on pace not HR. I usually hit my lap button every mile and guage my pace from that.
I do have a Polar watch/footpod thing that I could gauge pace from. I am too lazy to get it set up so I just go the old fashioned way and time each mile. This seems the best option for you as you only need to wear one watch, and your strap is compatible with both.
I’d wear the Garmin during training to map out your courses. If you want to save a bike course for your CT, could you drive it the night before with the Garmin?
Sometimes technology is a pain. I’ll admit I do not use my powermeter to it’s fullest.
I use a timex system, hr under my wetsuit (allthough the damn thing won’t read under water)
and the gps pod in a bag under my swim cap.
the watch seems to record the distance/speed info ok
during the swim, but as soon as I leave the water it all comes together giving me good splits and pace data.
If you want to save a bike course for your CT, could you drive it the night before with the Garmin?
Just use an online mapping program like mapmyrun.com or gmap-pedometer.com to map the course. The programs allow you to save the course in many formats, including the format needed for computrainers. Then upload it to the compotrainer. It works like a charm.
I think the polar watch/footpod thing seems like the best bet. Just click the watch on at the start of the race and have the footpod on my shoes for T2. so i can get my avg pace while im running.
Yeah i could map it before not a big concern. If i need to map a race i can do it online. I may pick up the computrainer program for that.
Quite honestly in any sprint or olympic distance i do i will probably never wear a HR moniter but thats just my personal preference.
Thanks for everyones help. Guess i’ll start looking at polar watches for racing next year.
