Ok guys I just went to ontario to train for a whole week. how nice. I got to ride on endless roads with no stops, with brutal winds to simulate kona. Good place to train in the summer. I can see why canada (my own country) produces good triathletes… All I can say is that I will always be a canadian… (a french one perhaps but still
…come on Marisol, our Yankee friends have some pretty nice areas to ride. Adirondack, San Diego, Colorado, mountains in North Carolina and some of the riding in Washington State, the Sierra nevadas in CA near Tahoe, and Oregon all beat Ontario any day.
That being said, I am happy to keep giving my tax money to the Cdn government until Jun 15th or so before I earn any pennies for my family. Its all worth it.

I just spent a week back “home” in central Alberta. As you say, endless roads with about one stop sign every 15 miles. There were hawks all over the place and I even saw a wolverine! Going out for 3 hours in Alberta nets you a steady 3 hours ride time. Going out for 3 hours here in Los Angeles gets me a stop-and-go 2 hours 40 minutes of actual ride time. The plus for Los Angeles is that the air doesn’t bother my asthma…less pollen! Go figure.
well mate, i live in downtown edmonton, and it’s a 30-minute car ride to the end of the suburbs before the real riding begins. the only way that a 3-hour ride yields 3 hours of cycling time for me is if i do laps of Hawrelak park.
i suppose the grass is always greener - say what you will about LA, but i bet it’s not 8 degrees and raining there at the moment.

LOL…six years living in the U.S. and that’s one thing I haven’t heard come out of an Americans mouth (left or right). :-).
$500 million to liberal party friendly ad. agencies and to build golf courses in Quebec for TheCreche’s buddies and you still say that? There would be a f’n revolution here in the US that happened. But, hey at least you don’t have American style healthcare. LOL
Yes, and then there’s BC which beats many of those locales hands down
Where else can you get such diversity in geography and climate? Heck it’s downright beautiful. Once K is a bit older, I’m hoping to ride more of the province instead of driving it.
Dundas and Collingwood. So more western Ontario - well, at least west of Toronto (and a little north). Those are great spots for riding. I usually ride east and north of Toronto (in and around Markham, Uxbridge, Port Perry, etc). Great spots to ride early.
In far-eastern Ontario, the endless roads are all we have. From Casselman I can ride northeast towards Hawkesbury and southeast towards Alexandria, and there is only the very scattered stop sign. No hills to speak of (except around Vankleek Hill), however, but adundant, omnipresent wind. The downside is that there are virtually no paved shoulders, and people tend to drive the sparsely-populated roads quite fast. It is often unnerving, and for long seemingly-safe rides I duck down to NY and use the roads around and north of Tupper and Placid/Saranac. There I can enjoy wide shoulders, plus experience much-needed topography!
Yup gotta agree with you there!!! I have been really lucky to be training in SouthWest, Ontario where there’s tons of country roads with little to no relief from the wind and heat!!! Kona here I come…yipeeeeeeee
