I’m about to get my first computrainer and I hatched this crazy idea for winter riding mileage. I was hoping somebody knows how I could get elevation and GPS data from Google Maps and translate it into a workout. My idea is to ride virtually across the country workout by workout until I’ve covered coast to coast riding. Since it’s virtual I was going to use the Trans-Canada Highway since cars hitting me won’t be a factor.
MapMyRide.com will give you a GPX course that can be converted to 3DC format for Computrainer. I’ve done it before, but I also have a software tool (PerfPro) that will convert GPX into 3DC for Computrainer.
Thanks I was thinking that would probably do the trick. It’ll be a bit to organize and keep track of but I feel the journey will be well worth it in the end. It’s going to take me a lot of time to complete it (multiple years) but I think I shall venture into the unknown.
I’m still waiting for a company to build software that uses the Google street view images to piece together a moving visual image while you bike. That would be sweet. As it is, while you can use the GPS data with the Computrainer, it is all rendered in their low-budget 3D program, so every tree looks the same and the view never really changes. You’ll get bored quickly. At least I did, and rarely use the 3D mode anymore.
I rode the 2008 TDF in similar fashion. Once I started, I didn’t ride another course until I was done. I finished 36 hours 11 minutes and 3 seconds behind winner Carlos Sastre. Of course I did it solo and not in a peloton;)
It can be done but it is clunky. I hate riding outside cuz of cars so I put all my races on the ct then I have them broke down into 28 mi sections 56 etc… I have found that the climb % grades are not all that accurate. Send me a pm with your email and I will send you a step by step how to.
Might want to look at Tour de Giro. I haven’t used it but it appears that the graphics may be better than the CT 3D. Plus, if others are interested, they can join you for a ride.
While it would be great to be able to use Google Street View, I’ve been told by CT reps that won’t be happening as Google has partnered with another trainer Company (don’t recall who).
Get used to TT riding on the flats. From Canmore to past Winnipeg, a couple thousand kilometers, there are no grades of any kind. You will go for days of riding without seeing either a corner or a grade of any kind.
That’s good information to know thanks. I’m sure anyway you look at it riding indoors gets boring I’m just hoping keeping a larger goal in mind will help me pound away at the KMs. I can’t let Clara Hughs get all the glory riding Canada lol
