Good tubular tire for Planet X 82 front wheel?

What is a good tubular tire for Planet X 82 front wheel? This will be a race wheel only. I’m not looking for the best because I don’t race enough or have enough money for the best haha, but a solid wheel would be great.

I’m looking for a tough wheel so I don’t have to be paranoid of a flat, but something that is fast and race worthy. Thanks!

Conti Competition. About $70.
If too expensive, then Conti Sprinter, about $45.

Ahh yes, the fast, race worthy, cheap and tough tubular tire. haha.

If I were you I’d probably look at these:

And a can of vittoria pit stop.

Veloflex Carbon. Conti comps are pretty $, but nice. Sprinter is durable, but not very “fast”. Vittoria Evo CX nice as well, but also $

I recently got my planet-x race wheels and have not glued on the tires yet. I did measure the actual rim width, which as memory serves was either 20mm or 21mm. I went with the new 320 tpi Evo CX II in 21mm, which I got for both front and rear through PBK:

Which is currently $63 US before shipping.
Be aware that these use the “new” vittoria valves, where the valve on the tire itself is just a short extender. If you are using the extenders you got from Planet-X you’re fine, there’s another thread about using valve extenders with this tire somewhere on ST.

Additionally, after testing with the Zipp tire that flatted on me in a race last year, I put Caffe Latex sealant into the new tires. That cost about $30 or so from REI, and took about 10 minutes to do.
I did a few other super secret things to the wheels, can’t wait to try them!

I have not ridden mine yet, but the Corsa Evos are always a pretty safe bet. I’ve only heard good things about the new ones.

I use the sprinter gatorskins and they are great. People say they are not quick but they are plenty quick. They are also tough and for the $ I dont think you will get better. I tried the TUFOs from Planet X but they were ripped to shreds within 200km on my roads.

Thanks for the advice!

Will these wheels ever come in Clincher? The price is fantastic and the wheel looks amazing. I just don’t want tubular.
Make it in clincher and I will buy it.

I got the Vittoria corsa evo II on mine and no complaints thus far… if I was slow at the Triple T (I was) it certainly wasn’t the tire’s fault

I went with the Veloflex Carbons as well. These were my 1st road tubulars so I have nothing to comparre them to, but I did a lot of asking around prior and heard nothing but good things about the Veloflex Carbon.

I believe my Blackwell wheels (basically the same) were 19mm. I have been extrememly happy with the new Tangente 21mm on my new Zipps. I ran Conti Giro 22mm on my BW wheels, and was also happy with them.

Ironically, my old race wheel (nimble fly) had Record on it - this was slashed after a race two years ago with a razor blade (maliciously). I replaced it with a Tangente, which only lasted 1.5 races - it flatted in the middle of a race and a Pit Stop did not seal it. That’s the tire I tested the Caffe Latex on, which did seal it. Puncture resistance aside the Tangente did ride nice, and the puncture did not expand as I rode it in flat at 20mph!
