Good riding near San Angelo, Texas

To any ST’ers in “near West” Texas. Do any of you know of any good routes - 30-50 miles near San Angelo, Texas? I’ll be out there in mid-June for work for about 4 days and will be bringing my bike with me if there is good riding out there. Never been, so I’m at a loss for what roads/routes exist and where the safest riding is.

Anyone have suggestions?

I did the Wool Capital Triathlon a few years ago. It is put on by Jack Weiss of Ironhead Race Productions, here is the link for the 40km bike:

Map My Ride has a number of rides and runs in and near San Angelo.

Also look at the Permian Basin Cycling Association:

for rides and races in the area.

Also, Texas Bicycle Racing:

may have something for you…

Military right? Not much other reason to go to San Angelo! But try La Esperanza for Mexican food. I lived there three years.

There are 30 mile rides that leave Tues and Thurs nights from the TDOT building. There are a small number of fast-ish guys but nothing too crazy and people of all levels. Not too much attitude, which is nice.

The “ARDEN/BURMA/POWER LINES” route found here : http://www.sanangelobicycleassociation.com/roadbikeridesandmaps.html
is your best bet for hills but watch out for the trucks leaving the quarry. Also, people play pretend NASCAR leaving their ranches out there. Hard to get lost. The burma loop is longer but the road condition on 87 is poor At least it was 4 years ago:-) Seven sitsters route is good too and the hills are gentler.

Call Randy Rangel at Concho Bike Shop for more recent info. Super nice guy and the better shop of the two in town.

I’ve ridden and raced around San Angelo many times. The previously mentioned routes are good. That’s good advice to contact that bike shop because they can steer you away from the worst of the central and western Texas obstacles: Chip Seal Roads.

And be prepared for VERY HOT and VERY WINDY. Guaranteed. Minimum 15 mph winds (if you’re lucky), more likely 20+ mph. Also, take your own water supply 'cuz you’ll be really alone, and it’s a DRY heat, feels more like Albuquerque or Tucson than Dallas. Good luck and enjoy yourself.

Actually, I’m not military. I’m an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Texas. I’m representing Angelo State University (a part of the Texas Tech University System) in a lawsuit out there, and we have depositions all week that week. A Tuesday night group ride sounds perfect.

Thanks for all the information. I may call Randy when I get out there.
