Good 1/2 in midwest?

I’m looking for a “good” 1/2 to do in the Midwest, preferably in WI or MN, I did the WI Dells Tin Man last year, but it is no more this year. I was considering Racine but am still open for a few other options. Which are available and which should I pass up? I’d like a somewhat challenging course and as I’m a poor college student the cheaper it is, the better!

If I told you that you had a great body, would you hold it against me?

I’m doing Aurora High Cliffs near Appleton Wisconsin on June 26th. Have you considered that one? I’m sure it is still open. I’ll be up there next week on vacation and will be riding the bike course and maybe doing a short run on part of the course afterwards.

I’m heading down to Pigman in IA. I hear it’s pretty decent. Don’t do square lake.

Hmm,

Can’t help you in WI or MN.

Muncie Endurathon (IN) is a classic. Pretty flat and fast. Usually hotter 'n hell though. A large well run event.

Steelhead is in MI, just across the lake in Benton Harbor. Swim (when the current is favorable) is point to point. Bike and run have some challenging sections. Very well run. I highly recommend it.

As noted above…Pigman is an excellent event and Square Lake is perhaps the worst run 1/2 in the universe.

I did Racine last year. It’s fairly flat and there were lots of fast times on the course last year (partially due to the swim course being ~300 meters short). So if you’re looking for challenging as in a lot of up and down, this might not be the race for you.

Not to discourage you or anything. It’s a really small town, but it’s actually a nice, well organized race.

Tin man in Menomnie in a few weeks.

Square lake is ok. Only half in Minnesota. Gotta take care of your self though.

I agree that Muncie Endurathon is a classic. Well supported. Well organized. Flat and fast. Definately worth doing at least once.

Swim at Steelhead is always favorable. They change the start point depending on the current. The end point remains the same. This is a GREAT race!

I’m doing the Aurora High Cliff 1/2 IM in June as well. If it’s good enough for “the man”, it’s good enough for me! (Dave Scott did the race last year, placing second to pro Jared Berg. I heard he was friends with the race director or someone involved with the organization).

Square lake 1/2 is ok, not well supported, the course is ok, nothing exciting.

if you are of the mind to head east a little, the Lansing Legislator in mid August is very nice. had a bit of a problem with a fog delay for the inaugural event last year. but the course is outstanding. basic swim, very good road surface for the bike with some rollers but no huge grades, minimal traffic, and a well marked and supported run course. i’m going back.

If I told you that you had a great body, would you hold it against me?

damnit! have you learned nothing from our teachings? This is possibly the worst one liner I’ve ever heard of!

Slap! Now get back to the drawing board, young man! I know you can do better…you’re just not applying yourself!

Excuse me, but I think I dropped something. MY JAW!!

Is that better?

oh jeez

now you’ve done it
.

It was either that, or :

Hi Trigirl. I would like to award you the SlowTwitch Babe of the week award for looking so good. Now if you will give me your name, number and other vital statistics I’llo enter you in our grand prize drawing which could win you an all expense paid date with me.

I have to agree with you on both of those races. Last year at Muncie was great and Steelhead is a great race. You can’t go wrong with either of them. Anyone else doing Muncie this year?

I’ll be in Muncie again this year…I’ve heard they changed the run course back to a loop instead of point-to-point…don’t know how much difference that will make other than I personally hope they keep the mile markers in place on the run this year!

As for alternatives check out the U.S. 1/2 Championships in K.C…extremely well run race and they do have “general entry” slots available so you don’t need top qualify…

my .02,

Paul

I’m hitting HalfMax outside of St. Louis on June 5th, and then the Cutting edge 1/2 Iron in Effingham, IL, on 7/17. Cutting Edge is a fun little race, very very flat. It will be my first time at halfmax, supposed to be very well supported with excellent road conditions.

It is a most excellent race - just wear big shoes for the run~!
