I’m out of the loop. Is this a regular occurrence for Javier Gomez to be hanging in Kona? Hanging with Macca and Allan? First congrats to every pro and age grouper preparing to give’r this Saturday. I watched Gomez place 3rd in Edmonton at ITU World Championships and 6 days later I was in Mont Tremblant watching him crush the run going up hill. All I could imagine was him racing in Kona. Does anyone know what’s going on? Is the man on route to 140.6?
Well, I’m sure he’s got sponsor responsibilities this week. He also qualified with his win in Tremblant so he’ll probably race next year. He’ll probably validate early in the year so he focus on ITU for the spring/summer. That’s all speculation, I don’t believe he’s said anything about racing an IM or Kona.
IS there more $$ in ITU or long distance?
I’d have thought he’d stick to ITU for the next couple of years at least, then move up. He’s world champion and can hang with the Brownlees for the time being at least.

He’s said many times he doesn’t plan to race any 70.3s (or longer) until after Rio.
Xterra WC the week after kona on Maui.

He’s a triathlete, where else would you want to be this weekend? I’m sure he has plans to get there eventually. And he’ll probably smash it.
Specialized and Roka probably want him there for media and photo shoots. Plus he might do XT Maui (probably not thinking Kona 'til after Rio).
I saw him today when I was out riding at the far end of Alii Drive going in the opposite direction that I was. He’s definitely here.
Hey Guys! Talked to him briefly outside of bike works on Alii yesterday before his ride with the Specialized gang. I asked him when we would see him racing down here and he said not for at least 2-3 years. Looks like focus will be Rio!
I’d have thought he’d stick to ITU for the next couple of years at least, then race Ironmen in retirement. He’s world champion and can hang with the Brownlees for the time being at least.
Fixed that for you!
Thanks everyone! Something special happens when you’re taking these big events in. As I competed in Worlds ITU and fell short at Kona 70.3 and Calgary 70.3 I was the spectator. I was proud for my girlfriend and training partner as she got her spot and we were able to go to Tremblant. Being a spectator can be more emotional than participating itself? Gomez won’t be as emotional maybe however he’s mind has to be racing? That’s what he does! He races, and FAST. Looking forward to seeing him race when he is ready. Until then I will cheer on my favourites. Heather and Trevor Wurtele and going with Seb for the men. I will hope for Crowie too!
Specialized sent almost all their athletes to Kona a couple years ago. Paula Findlay, Whitfield and other ITU stars were there, all riding TT bikes. It’s all about promotion, so, totally normal that Gomez is there. But he is probably also scoping it all out for his ironman debut in a couple years.
If I had a sponsor pay for me to spend some time in Hawaii, I would seriously consider it.

Very much doubt that he’ll be there next year. One year out from the Olympics he’s going to be starting getting very focused and specific.
hi ironjohnb,
we flew javier out to kona both for marketing purposes, to do some new product testing, and to help him get out here to scout the course for the future. he’s said multiple times that he’s interested in kona post-rio, and of course we want to support that.
re: macca and mark allen, we signed them both this season. we had scheduled to have javi and macca chat behind our expo booth on thursday, and mark allen also stopped by. so we included him in the shoot and interview. it was a really cool experience, and the discussion was very interesting. we’ll post the content at some point.
best,
rob
He also said on the IMLIVE broadcast that the earliest he’d be in Kona would be 2017. His focus is Rio. Period.
Bob
Gomez and Frodo head-to-head for next generation?
Damn it’s gonna be sparks flying everywhere.
Even Gomez himself mentilned Lionel Sunders as a hot contender…
I help people go faster! I love it Rob!
Thank you for taking the time to reply. It’s always impressive when the brand speaks and what a brand with great athletes.
Super cool, great work supporting your team.
The banter weather or not Javier is best in the world is simple, he is! You can debate all you want however ITU #1 and 70.3 #1
Looking forward to post RIO then the conversation can begin about who is best at Ironman 140.6
Happy training until then. Go Go Go

Actually, I think it would be, “Stick to ITU for the next couple of years at least, then retire and race Ironman.”
