Goldsprints

Anyone done them? We had them at our team party tonight. What crazy fun! I’d never done them before and I had to go up against Brooke, our team brewer, in a beer sprint. [On “GO”, you must chug a cup of beer and throw it down before starting sprinting. Damn! I used to could chug in college, but doing it and then trying to sprint 500 meters on a fixed gear was just a little hard. Ever try burping when you are spinning 120 rpms at max effort? Doesn’t work so well. I definitely want a rematch. Just not on the night before a cross race! Plus, sprinting in jeans and tennis shoes!

Oh yeah, Roller racing is an integral part of West of Quebec Wheelers’ winter program. They don’t use the term Goldsprints, but same stuff, a ton of fun.

Start here for last year’s review, lots of links to people’s photo albums for each night. I think they have 3 or 4 events planned this winter.

Some of those links to make it faster: Justin Wonnacott’s album
and Joel Sidhu’s album.

WQ Wheelers have tons of fun, and the roller nights are big success.

Look for The “Mufferaw Joe” springtime ride. Intended to be an epic ride, (and delivered last year with rain and mud), and is an homage to Big Joe Montferrand, immortalized by Stompin Tom Conners’ Big Joe Mufferaw (Youtube performance) . It’s a great event worth looking into. You better like gravel roads and tough, hard conditions. Total opposite to the nice smooth rollers.

A whacky bunch.

Looks fun! They’ve done it here a number of times, but last night was the first time I’d been able to go. Though the beer sprint probably isn’t the best idea the night before a cyclocross race.

I raced 2 out of the 3 WQW Roller events in Ottawa. They run the 500m Goldsprint and then a 1000m free roller event. Last year they ran open qualifying, with top 16 moving to head to head eliminations, which could mean alot of races in a night. This year it might be a little different, they have 4 sets of rollers connected to the clock now. But you can never go wrong with bicycle racing in a bar.
