Going to SF - Where to stay?

My wife and I are heading out to SF for a getaway weekend in a few weeks. Any suggestions for hotels? We are just sightseeing and generally enjoying a lazy weekend…

How much do you want to spend? What do you want to do? Will you be renting a car and sight seeing out of the city?

Cost isnt’ really an issue for us, but I’d say we’d like to keep it under $200/night. We’ll have a car and will just be geeky tourists all weekend.

I always liked to stay at the Sheraton (do you have a starwood membership?) Fisherman’s Wharf (prior to moving here, of course). Nice hotel with parking. Its in tourist central. You could also look at the St Francis or the Sir Francis Drake or some of the other hotels in Union Square, but they are likely expensive and I don’t know how parking works with them. There are some really inexprensive places to stay at Union Square, like the Strattford, but they are cheap for a reason. Not bad, I’ve stayed there, but its not luxury by any stretch of the imagination. There are also several places on Lombard- Cow Hollow Inn, etc.

Thanks for the info. I’d rather spend a bit more and have a nice vacation for my wife (we’ve had our share of crappy hotel rooms already!). It’d be fun to stay at the wharf…I’ll look into the Sheraton there. Thanks!

The wharf is tacky.

If you want a grand old fashioned Hotel with lots of mahogany try The Palace, The St Francis, or the Fairmont. You should be able to get a $200 room and they are more centrally located.

The wharf is tacky, but it is a tourist destination. I really like the Sheraton, and its going to be less expensive than the likes of the Fairmont.

I wouldn’t want them to miss out on the bush man.

I haven’t seen Bush Man much recently, someone must have punched him in the mouth!

One more hotel that should be looked at is this little gem,

Oh, good one. I’m all for North Beach.

Been there twice in the last 2 years. Both times stayed at the Omni and would never consider a different location. Perfect location. One block from Chinatown. Couple blocks from Union Square. Fisherman’s Wharf is within walking distance (although its a hell of a hike).

Service is amazing too.

Bush Man is AWESOME!!! I generally don’t give money to street performers or the homeless since I am a heartless right wing republican. But this guy got cash from me for sure.

I gotta see this dude now.

Another entertaining dude to look for is the Surly Led Zepplin guitar player. He has been at the cable car turn around both times I was there. He plays like 3 songs over and over again. Stairway to Heaven being his favorite. He is totally sarcastic when thanking people for applause etc. Cracked me up both time we were there.

I’d stay in a small boutique hotel or B&B.
