Dear fellow MTBers!
If you have done this event before, you understand how “it’s not really about the bike.” When I say this, I suggest everyone have the best bike, tire etc selection. With that, there is something that trumps this: Pacing and nutrition.
I always tell an athlete that they had a good race if they were able to ride hard over the last 2 hours. Year after year, the majority of the heads are hanging low as they limp around the finish area in the old town of Leadville. In my four years of racing, I had a crew of three to feed me throughout the day, ensuring I would not fail due to poor nutrition.
2 years ago, I sat out of the race, but offered a service to do exactly what I think would be the best user of my time: creating a feed zone. If any of those 10 are reading, please feel to reply and share your experience.
I write this message in the final countdown to the Kona of MTB. I have finished hard over the last 2 hours of this race the 4 times I have done it. If you have any interest in eliminating the worries of how you are going to fuel yourself, not lugging a 6 pound CamelBack up and down the Rockies, while getting some sound final advice that may make your day much brighter, please reach out.
Just as 2015, we are limiting this to 10 athletes.
What will be provided:
- Support at starting line and taking clothes etc
- Feed at bottom of Powerline outbound.
- Feed at bottom of Columbine outbound and inbound
- Feed at bottom of Powerline Inbound.
Just as important, we have the ability to talk you through the event until race day. This intangible has a lot a value regardless if you have done the event or first timer.
I hope everyone has all of these boxes check, but based on history, probably not. That is why we offer this last minute service.
Whether you are a 7 hour or 12 hour rider, nutrition is more important than any bike part.
Please reach out to me if you want help. It will be the best $250 you invested on this crazy journey.
As a racer I know more than any hired feeder how important it is to get that bottle and such.
