GOING LONG - PEEK WEEK 1&2 question

Training for IMLOU and following Gordos book. I have a question about the final 2 weeks before race week called PEAK WEEK

PEAK WEEK 1, NO. 1 says session should last 2 to 3.5 hours…does this include the the 30-45 minute run for the brick?
same for
PEAK WEEK 1, NO 2 says the session is normally 3-4 hours long with 45-60 minutes of running…so does that mean BIKE FOR 3-4 hours and than run 45-60 minutes or is that 45-60 minute run included in the 3-4 hours…

Any idea?

The running should be included in the total time…You are talking about the BT workouts right?

Yes, that includes the running. For what it’s worth, I remember Gordo posting something a few years back the he changed his feelings on the Peak Week One, Workout #2 BT session (takes place two weeks before race day)…he suggested a race rehearsal ride of 112 or so, possibly followed by a short run. Both are valid of course.

So peek week 1 is three weeks out If I understood correctly?
Isn’t 112 miles or so bike ride 3 weeks out a bit too much?
(as a reference I did an 1/2 Iron AquaBike the Sunday before IMLP)

Cheers,
Fred.

Not an expert on this having only done 2 IMs but I did a 112 mile bike and 20 minute run 3 weeks out for both races. Seems to me to be the same philosophy as marathon training. That was the beginning of the taper.

Yes, peak week 1 ends two weeks from race day. Personally, I don’t think 112 miles 3 weeks out is too much at all.

I know of other coaches who recommend doing a race rehearsal two weeks out. I did a 112/6 brick on 7/7 in prep for IMLP on 7/22. Two weeks of taper/peak is plenty of time to recover from that workout if you do it correctly.

gordo reccommends doing the race simulation during the last week in the build period which was last weekend.

thanks for everyones comments!

No, you will be fine doing that. Remember (not that you necessarily need to be reminded of this) it is a focused ride too, not a scones-and-coffee-at-the-40-mile-mark kind of ride. It will give you an excellent feel for what to expect during the IM bike leg. Also, and most importantly, it’s an excellent workout. Plenty of time to recover. Good luck!
