Next Saturday, 9/10/11, after over 40 years as a Union heavy construction carpenter in around NYC, I’ll be retiring from the World Trade Center job. Then the hard work begins. On the 14th I’ll be having surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery, on my left shoulder for a tear in the labrum. This is so I can build the strength up for the next repairs; on November 15 I’m having bilateral hip resurfacing by Dr Scott Marwin at NYU Joint Disease Hospital. This is major and I can’t wait to get it over with. I haven’t run for two years because of arthritis in my hips. Cortesone kept me going on the mountain bike but this year at all collapsed. It’s a six month recovery but afterward I’ll be able to begin running again, but I have one more stop. Back to HSS for carpal tunnel surgery on both hands. Then I’ll be ready!
I plan to focus on swimming through my rehab and celebrate my comeback by doing Waikiki Rough Water Swim in September. Hope to resume middle distance; 6 to 12 hours, mountain bike racing and hope to get my 5K time as close as possible to 20 minutes as I can at 62 years old.
But mostly I want my plans to go like this:
Surgery 2011
Recovery 2012
American Zoffingan SC 2013 ( I’ve wanted to do it for years)
