Goggles - The Nightmare! (UPDATED)

Ok, Here is an update for you guys…

I got the TYR(heh, typed TSR first by mistake  Socket Rocket 2.0 goggles… and within less than a lap, they leaked. :frowning:

The Kaiman goggles I got, they seemed OK for about 1,000yds, then they started slowly seaping(sp?) on me. I am going to send them back to all3sports and try another pair… could you guys recommend something else?

*** OLD POST ***
I have spent a small fortune on goggles.

I have bought everything from:

TYR’s masks, Aquasphere’s Seal XP, Barracuda Panavision, Barracuda’s B300’s, and a few other “cheaper” swim goggles.

The best thing I’ve found is a pair of (I think) speedo goggles that have a sort of double gasket or something that this nice person TSR’ed to me. They don’t leak or fog, but after about 1.6 miles they start KILLING my eye sockets. I’ve loosened them up and they still hurt.

So it’s either leak, or have these terrible pains in my eyes from goggle pressure.

Am I the only one out there that has had this problem? Or do you all just suffer silently and it’s all “part of the training”.

I was supposed to swim 1.2 this morning, and kept stopping every other lap to get the water out of my TYR’s and changed to the Aquaspheres and had to stop to clear those out. :frowning: What a pain in the ARSE!

Trae, have you tried the Kaiman googles? I’ve been through a few and have settled back in with speedos. Try the competition CGs (I think). They have a little black closed cell foam pad, sort of the same as the double gasket, but no gasket, if that makes sense.

Get some Swedish goggles…very cheap, last a long time, and never leak. Just don’t have them as tight as you are probably used to with all your other goggles.

I second that one. I’ve been with swimming with with same pair of AquaSeal Kaiman goggles for almost three years.

It would seem odd that none of the “many” goggles don’t fit. Are you properly adjusting the eye bridge?

Of the goggles you mentioned, I had leakage problems with the XP…but not the standard Seal mask. Although, I don’t use that anymore.

Speedo Vanquisher Plus works like a charm for me…

Occy- I wasn’t a swimmer until I got to college and had the same problems you’re having. The solution I found was so simple I couldn’t believe it. I continually tried to tighten my goggles thinking to keep water out they had to be as snug as possible…not the case. One day, deciding to try something different, I loosened them up, and instead of pressing them against my eyes, simply let them touch the skin around my eyes, I didn’t press on them at all. Presto: no water. Also, because they’re not super tight, the eye pain you’re talking about after awhile of swimming (I would get headaches) will (hopefully) be drastically reduced. I hope this helps.

occy - Swedish goggles are great; Tyr and speedos have even started their own lines.

I never got used to the ones you describe. I use a cheap pair of Tyr that works great (do not tigthen them too much)

Also, if you have access to the Arena product line, they have a few goggles that are quite good and provide a good seal.

TYR Racetech. When I coached summer teams, I had every kid wearing these. I have met very few people these do not work for. At $7 it is worth a shot.

Do you have a relatively small face? I always had leaking problems until I went to swim store to try to find a pair that work and then got me to try a smaller pair (not kids ones, but smaller) and they work perfectly.

Lot’s of great advice, and QUICK! (Just how us ST’ers like it huh?

Yeah, for those that mention the tightening of the goggles too much, I did notice with the one pair of TSR’ed speedos that if I had them real loose, then they didn’t leak, the only problem was the pressure in the eye sockets.

I even loosend up the masks too to see if this would help and it didn’t. I LOVE swimming, as it’s the only sport I feel half-way good at. If I didn’t have to stop and constantly mess with goggles, I’m sure I could turn in some decent times.

I guess I’ll give the Kaimans(sp?) a try and then after that possibly the Vanquishers and a few of the others you guys mentioned. I still say it’s one big scam and you guys all work for the goggles industry!

With the amount I’ve spent on goggles so far, I could (almost) get a P3C! chuckle

Anyhoo… thanks very much for all the thelp gang. I just need to get this all sorted, and be comfortable before I hit the waters @Panama City this November.

I get that pressure thingy too, and it sucks. I just suck it up, princess, and get over it.

I use Speedo Vanquisher in the pool and USA mirror-tinted for open water. Found these USA goggles at my local dive shop, and they are EXTREMELY comfortable - but the tint’s way too dark for pool wearing. I don’t get the pressure thingy with these USA goggles.

I second the swedish goggle advice. Its the only way to go. Very simple, cheap - no leaks. And they don’t hurt.

i tried the seal mask and that thing leaked for 1.2 miles straight. I then switched to the kaimen and that thing has been absolutely great. I second that choice, but I’m sure each person is different and has different face shapes, so it might not work for you. Oh yeah, and I work for Aquaseal. No i’m kidding

could someone please explain these things to me? I realize that MANY people swear by these, but I’ve looked at them - no pad, no seal, how can they not leak/hurt???

You have to get them adjusted just right…but once you have master this art, there’s not turning back! There are a couple tricks to it though.

  1. Don’t worry about the nose piece being exactly, just tie it so its close, but wide. Then, twist the nose piece so the string winds (tightens)

  2. Don’t wear the strap to tight. This is the biggest mistake, and the reason most people have pain. There should be slight tention.

  3. Most people wear the strap very high, on the back of their head. For some people this works, but if you have leaking or pain, move the strap down. My strap goes right over my ears and straight back from the eyes. This gives even pressure on the goggle

Last, there are some “knock-offs” of swedish goggles now that are a softer rubber material, instead of hard plastic. This limits the periphrial vision, but helps get use to the socket like goggles.

ok, so i’ve noticed that my friend trigoneroadie has no racoon sucker eyes after the swim. she uses these. but how in the hell do you put them together out of the package???

Heh, Do you use these things in OW swims? I mean, sure they look k-rad 31337(elite) at the pool and all, but… I would imagine someone breathing hard on you would rip things things right off.

I think my problem is, I have a big nose. There, I said it! Do all of you other people who have this problem have fairly larger nozzles?

With as cheap as they are, I’ll probably toss a pair in with my next order just to try em’ out.

Trae

man don’t worry about the nose. i got a big italian nose and they work fine.

You should try the Tyr Socket Rockets. They are basically swedes with a tiny gasket and they don’t need to be put together. I use them in training and racing and have never had any issues.
