I used to always wear over until i lost my goggles during warm up at race in Santa Cruz. Thought i was being cool surfing in a wave and instead got pummled and lost them. Did the whole (ocean) swim with no goggles and by time i finished i was sure the fog had come in…but alas it was just my eyes totally bloodshot from the salt water. For ocean or rough swims i put them under the cap even if it is a pain.
Under. Anything that’ll help, even if it’s small, prevent them from getting pulled off in a race… I can’t imagine locating them in the mess of people.
I watched a swim competition on TV the other day. Why did some of the olympic/college swimmers wear 2 caps, goggles in between the caps?
I am guessing it is for speed….a smooth swim cap or a swim cap with goggles over it. Yes, very little drag from goggle straps….but those races are so darn close, I bet that is the reason. I may be wrong…that’s just my guess. I would be interested to know the drag factor if this is the reason.
Over. 50+ races including mass starts, never lost them
ETA - are people really having issues getting their cap/goggles off? I have lots of T1 issues, that’s never been one of them
Pool swimmers at top-level competitions layer two caps: latex over the hair, goggles, then a silicon cap or dome cap over that. Two caps help smooth out the wrinkles; they protect the goggle straps, and caps stay on better when two are layered.
Layering with the latex cap under gives the silicon cap something to grip on. Most people who have worn silicon caps alone know those are prone to slipping.
Additional benefits are that a latex layer helps smooth out the wrinkles so the silicon cap on top is smoother.
Almost all tri- and open-water race caps are latex. A swimmer can still get lots of wrinkle-smoothing and strap protection if two latex caps are layered.
Gotta go under…looks pro
.
Personal preference…I wear my over my cap unless I’m diving in.

I generally don’t use a cap in the pool, except some races.
In the ocean, googles over cap.
One reason you often see pool competitors with a cap over goggle strap is to keep the straps on during the dive.
Shouldn’t be a problem with a good dive and good fit.
