Gun and ammo shortage

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-03-29-ammo-shortage_N.htm

I checked this out for myself last weekend. A trip down to the local gun shop revealed no semi-auto handguns, a waiting list for a Glock or anything exotic, out of 40 cal and 9mm ammo and just a few odd revolvers in the case.

It’s enough to panic a redneck right winger I tell ya.

Last time I saw this was in the late 70’s when Teddy Kennedy looked like he might get the nod and he was talking gun ban.

There was an earlier thread on this. As a former target shooter (both myself and my Dad) - we would go through easily 1500 rounds a week. We handloaded everything. I mean crap, 3/4 of your price is for new brass. We would buy ammo maybe twice a year as the brass wore out. Used to cruise the tire shops for old lead weights, then made our own ingots. We had multiple casts for different calibers depending on indoor range, outdoor range or heavy steel sillouhette, and could control our powder mixes as well.

Is nobody doing this anymore??

I can see the issue if you never fire the damn thing, and just carry it around or keep it at home for defense, but really, if you are out there buying ammo on a regular basis why are you not casting and loading? It is not rocket science.

I wonder if there’s been a run on Bibles.

People are doing that as well…there is a huge shortage of primers and powder right now, the only thing I can find is Magnum primers for small handgun, and some pretty high octane hunting powder. At least locally, there is some on the net, but I hate paying the hazardous material fees for the shipping. Bullets are about the only think you can find in mass still, everything else is get it when you can. I know a few people that are stocking up, so the grab whatever they see, whenever they see it.

Not to mention, lots of reloading equipment on backorder as well…took me 4 months to get all my stuff, for some reason scales seem to be the hardest thing to get right now, always out of the nice ones.

You are competing with the drug lords for basic equipment:-)

My wife’s godfather passed away recently - he was a gun collector, and reloader. She and her brother were the sole heirs. She/I got several new toys  from an 1873 Springfield to more modern stuff, plus about 10,000 rounds of various ammo - plus all the reloading equipment.

On top of more than 50 pounds of powder, I got a bunch of brass, casting equipment and at least 100 pounds of lead. I think I’m set for a while. I may need to buy primers though.

I’m going to be popular with my coworkers who enjoy shooting.

About a month ago I bought a Ruger LCP. It wasn’t in stock and they said it would be 6-8 weeks before it came in. The gun store was PACKED!!! Ammo shelfs were bare. Since the Ruger LCP is a .380 and there is no .380 ammo anywhere to be found, I wouldn’t know what to do with the gun even if I had it. I guess I could look at it and pretend it makes a bang sound.

Come to Georgia we have your guns.Ammo inventory is down but you can still get enough.

Or VT, we must have 50 ARs at the local bunker… we liberals like our guns

Want to sell a couple?

The feds dont like straw purchases

(Oh, when I say bunker, I mean local gun shop, it kind of looks like a bunker, hence the nickname - that probably wasn’t clear)

Was that after Kennedy dropped his girlfriend off in a swamp in Florida?

Are you kidding me $600 for a plastic Glock, they are ripping people off in Georgia! Spend a few hundred more and get a real pistol.

I have a Glock .40 cal and can’t stand it. It was a gift a few years ago from my dad as he knew I liked to shoot and overall I’ve never been impressed with it. My Sig Sauer on the other hand, well it’s a dream to shoot. Now that’s a well made pistol.
