Jonathan Caron – AKA - Jonnyo
Quebec native, Jonathan Caron has ramped up his Ironman career to some new heights. With his focus now on Ironman racing, this came after paying his dues at the National Triathlon Training Centre in Victoria British Columbia. Same place as 2000 Olympic gold winner, Simon Whitfield, and three -time Ironman World Champion, Peter Reid honed their skills.
Using the short course training program to develop his speed, the twenty-nine year old feels he has a shot at hitting the podium here at Ironman Canada this year. And why not. Now living in Penticton, Caron placed seventh in Ironman Arizona earlier this year and has gone on to win the Canadian National Long Distance Championships and the Victoria Half. His success this year did not go unnoticed by new sponsors spotting his potential. Orbea bikes, Nineteen Wetsuits and the Bike Barn have stepped up and backed the aspiring professional. With a 9:02 time for his first outing in Kona in 2006 and a 3:01 marathon the kid has been rewarded for his work on the short course circuit over the past 8 years.
Caron’s plan for Sunday is to get on the bike fresh (Read: He is not going to get sucked in trying to mark the speedsters on the swim), ride solid and let it rip on the run. He purposely did not take his Kona spot in Arizona as he did not want to have a built -in excuse to bail out and put it on cruise control at Ironman Canada. Starting to get the drift what the 25th running of this race means to Caron?
When not racing Ironman races, the personable, down to earth professional has provided spotting duties at Ironman Coeur d’ Alene and Hawaii for Iroman.com.
Good luck on Sunday Jonathan.
