Gmap-->motionbased-->google earth (help, i want pretty course profiles)

Long story short: I want to see a 3D view of the course I ride without using a GPS device. I hope you’re familiar with motionbased.com.

I see that gmap-pedometer.com will export your course to a GPX file. I see that motionbased.com can take that GPX file and make something like this:

I also think that motionbased can export this as a GoogleEarth file, and GoogleEarth can show me something like this:

Does anyone here know if this is possible? Every time I try to upload the GPX file I receive an error message. Can I get pretty pictures like this without a GPS device?

i’d love to hear about this as well. I’ve tried to export from gmap-pedometer as well with no success.

I have used Motionbased and love all the features they offer. But I’m not sure I understand your question. Are you trying to track your course without a GPS device?

Do you have mapping software?

It worked for me before I got my Garmin.

  1. Use GMapPedometer or Maymyrun.com or any of those to map out your ride. Follow the instructions for saving the route as a GPX file - it involves adding a GMATtoGPX bookmark. Then, save it as a gpx on your HD.

  2. You can then import that GPX file directly into MotionBased. Login to your account, then go to upload. Upload directly from your HD.

Hope that’s clear. Anyway, it works well.

can you export file into xml format? You can upload an XML file to motionbased and immediately have it plotted into GoogleEarth from MB’s web client.

There is also this:

to convert from GPX to XML

The support team are Motionbased are the absolute best. Try emailing someone there; they are usually very timely with responses. I know there are few tricks to getting your file to upload perfectly. For example, if your recording device skips at all – stops recording for a few seconds – the Motionbased software tries to fill in the blanks. As you can imagine the software gets confused easily if there are too recording errors. You might want to start out with several short files. Also, make sure your recording device is working correctly the entire time.
