A friend placed 3rd in a 5k which was sponsored by a local orphanage. At the awards presentation she was presented a check for 100.00. She felt bad about accepting the check and handed it right back to the nun in front of the crowd (everyone clapped at the gesture). Meanwhile, the 1st and 2nd place winners were standing there holding checks probably feeling like crap. My friend realized what she had done afterwards. She probably should have been more discreet in the way she gave the money back as not to slight anyone but I am sure the other winners didnt have the best things to say about her act.

It was a wonderful gesture, and she should be happy to be able to help the agency. She shouldn’t worry about the other two folks. She did a nice thing.
Yeah, I agree. She shouldn’t care what the others think. She didn’t do it to make them feel bad. She was just being nice.
The way you described it, it was not done to make herself look better so there was nothing wrong with it. Also consider the example it set for everyone else.
I agree she was doing it out of kindness. I just wonder if the childrens home knows that by giving out money, they put people in a weird situation about keeping it.
