Is there anything comparable to the Giro Air Attack? I’m intrigued by the design. Doing IMTX so will be using it in hot temps…curious about ventilation.
thats the only big “aero road helmet”. there are plenty of aero helmets with good ventilation but so far, its a trade off speed for vents
edit: I use the rudy wingspan which has removable vent covers, so it can go from no vents, to lots of vents without the need to buy a second helmet or anything.
I just tried on an Air-Attack last week and it didn’t fit my head. Not the size of it, but that shape of Giro’s are all similar. I was upset because I really wanted that lid. I went with a Vorttice instead but can’t say how the vents work…yet.
Man, I am waiting for the Air Attack to be released to order it. Where did you try it on?
Now that you said that it didn’t fit you, I’m wondering if it will fit me. What do you mean with “shape of Giro’s”?
Giro’s generally fit oval heads better. LG’s Vorttice and the Rudy Wingspan fit a more round head better.
I am looking at aero helmets as well, and haven’t decided between old school tail or the AA… I’ve tried a Giro Advantage 2, but their M/L is too tight. So I am concerned about aero helmets being too tight for a 70.3 length day in the saddle… I am trying to fit a helmet on my 60.75cm head. My current target aerohelmets are:
- Bell Javalin (S:52-56cm, M:55-59cm, L:58-62cm) w/ visor
- LG Vorttice (S: 52-56cm, M: 56-59cm, L: 59-62cm) w/ visor
- Specialized TT2 (XS/S:52-58cm, M/L:55-61cm)
- Kask K31 Crono (XS-XL:53-61 cm)
- Lazer Tardis (M:52-58cm, L:59-61cm)
- Rudy Project Wingspan (“unisize”: 54-59cm)
- Giro Selector (see below) w/ visor
- Giro Air Attack (see below) available w/ visor
Edit: I got word from Giro that their website is a little off on the listed sizing:
Correct sizing for the Selector M/L is 55-61cm.
The Advantage 2 Large is a 59-63cm.
Air Attack large is also 59-63cm.
I would prefer a visor’ed helmet (to reduce the effect of looking up through the top edge of my Oakley Radars…). At this time the Bell is my front runner - but it seems like that would be the warmest. The LG seems bigger too.
The biggest problem I see with TT helmets is finding a place that has some or all of them to try on. At best a bike or tri store has a couple.
How do check if your head is oval? I thought everybody’s head was kinda oval.
we need a ovalometer device.
btw… that LG Vorttice Black Knight Helmet is bad a$$. But I bet you’d bake on a 100 degree day.
I have a buddy who works for giro and he was driving this (and a few new helmets) to different shops before they order. I have a square’ish head in one direction, and round the other way. I used to have a giro advantage-2, and it sat on my head and only touched 2 points; one dead square in the middle of my hair line and the other was in the middle of the back of my head. Air attack was the same fit even though it felt light(er), the pressure on 2 spots gives me a headache after 5-10 minutes in the saddle. LG’s fit me perfect.
…thats what I just bought. I am a little woried about the vent, but I mostly race sprints and Oly’s and I do not have problems with heat like some. But, this is a worry.
What about this thing?

Actually they have tested black helmets and they are no hotter than other colors. The foam insulates the head from the heat.
What about this thing?
Only two colors? Black or… (I am not wearing) Orange… but I have a dutch friend who would.
I am looking at that Kash K31 now… it’s 280g… (vrs 380 or so for the others…) wow… I can’t believe Competitive Cyclist has it for $200 (when their own website says $350 msrp)

To answer your question… it seems Kask has a less pointy aero helmet… http://www.kaskhelmets.com/Products/Time-Trial/BAMBINO
For what it’s worth, I’ve got some decent experience with the Air Attack and I though is had better ventilation than I expected it to have. But then there is always the look…
The Giro Reverb helmet has a similar shape. It was marketed as a commuter helmet, and can be found on year-end closeout for ~$30 (ex. at REI). It’s a throwback to the original Air Attack LeMond used in the early 90’s (they even have a “team Z” version).

Another helmet to consider is the LG Chrono. It’s a short tail helmet that doesn’t cover the ears, and has good ventilation.

Exactly what I ride. It does have a lot more vents, but the shape is similar. 9 vents all in a center channel. Breathable enough for riding in up to 80 degrees at least, I imagine it would work for anything though (what I’ve done since I got it in December). I can’t comment on exact aero benifits, but I swear it feels faster than my old helmet. Lazer also makes covers for their helmets and should be releasing fancy silver ones in the nearish future.
You can cover the unneeded vents w/electrical tape. The ones in the back help aerodynamics (so leave them). One up top is handy for spraying water.
What about this one from LG?

Is that LG popular?
